Families fall deeper into energy debt
As rising Energy Prices continue more families are falling into "Energy Poverty"
More families face "Energy Debt"
More families are in debt to Energy companies now, than twelve months ago as they struggle to deal with bills that have doubled over the last five years.
A third of families who were already in arrears on payments have fallen deeper into the red, according to a new survey by uSwitch, the comparison service, and YouGov, the market research agency.
Steep price rises by the large energy companies have raised the average family gas and electricity bills by £183 in the past year.
Up to 4m households may be in debt to their energy suppliers, said uSwitch, but only 20% of those interviewed had made a formal repayment plan. The remainder hope to pay off their debt without getting any outside help.
“Although suppliers have cut their prices this year, the average reduction doesn’t come near the average increase seen since the end of 2010,” Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch. Said.
