Social media can be an effective way of communicating the personality of a business via Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn and building a community. Look at 4N if you need convincing.

How to get buy-in with social media

We've been running sessions about how firms that want to get into social media need to set out their strategy first and in doing so often need to lobby decision-makers in a business that investing time and effort in this area is worthwhile.

Here's some tips on getting your message across to management that when customers/clients/opinion-formers are engaged in the social media sphere, then why sit outside, not involved in the conversation.

1. Have answers for the inevitable questions:

How do you measure return on investment?
Is it for the youth market?
Will it take a lot of time and resources?

2. Align the business case for social media with what your business does.

3. Prove that the people you want to connect with are using social media.

4. Show how are your competitors doing it and how can you do it better.

5. Emphasise that it is important to know what others are saying about you online and if it’s damaging, that its time to be part of the conversation.
