It’s 2012 and whether you like it or not, mobile apps and mobile websites are an absolute must for your business. Smartphones are no longer a vanity item with nearly half of British adults owning one.

Research indicates that Brits have become so dependent on their mobile smartphones that if they leave home without their wallet and without their smartphone, they’re more likely to turn around to get their smartphone than they are for their wallet.

From a business standpoint, we can put things in perspective by looking at the evolution of digital marketing (in particular websites and social media) and the adoption by businesses globally.

It wasn’t that long ago (early 1990s) when young and ambitious entrepreneurs were knocking on the doors of business owners and selling them on the benefits of having their own website for their business. With the Internet still in its infancy, many business owners were wary and uneducated about the benefits a website could have on their bottom line. It seemed to be more vanity than a necessity.

Fast-forward ten years to the early 2000s when businesses were just starting to wrap their heads around their new websites and out of nowhere there was a new wave of entrepreneurs knocking on their doors. Instead of selling websites, these entrepreneurs were talking about the benefits of social media and why every business owner needs to have a social media presence online.

Ten years down the road to 2012 and the skepticism's have subdued. Almost every business, small and large, now has an integrated social media and website presence and truly understands the importance of having both. Whether they agree with it or not, businesses must go where their customers are.

The Next Stage

By 2013, the number one way consumers will access the Internet is through their mobile devices. We’re living in a mobile world where smartphones are just as much a routine in our daily lives as brushing our teeth.

Website and social media adoption in the early 1990s and 2000s is a perfect metaphor of the mobile landscape and what’s to come for businesses globally. Having your own mobile website and mobile app might not be mainstream at the moment, but it’s undeniably following the same path of adoption.

We’re living in a mobile society where our customer’s smartphones are attached to their hips 24/7. Mobile searches have increased 4x since 2010 and our customers not only want a great mobile experience, but they’ve actually grown to expect great mobile experiences.

More fascinating is the fact that a bad mobile experience can actually cost you customers. A recent study by Compuware concluded:

• 57% would not recommend a business with a bad mobile site
• 40% have turned to a competitor’s site after a bad mobile experience
• 23% of adults have cursed at their phone when a site doesn’t work!
