I follow people I want to follow. Who they are following is of no interest to me at all. Neither is how many followers they have, how often they have tweeted, or what size shoes they wear. I follow them as I like what they say.

I agree with Stef.

When I get new followers I look at their profile..and also the type of tweets they send out.

If they are showing interactive tweets and look like the sort of people/person I'd chat to anyway, then I'll follow back.  If the tweets are impersonal or make the individual look like a bell-end then I won't.

Peter regarding your earlier comment about an automatic following tool - can it target particular businesses/people?

Yes but it's automatic so misses the point and is not very accurate.

You are better off learning how to do this with twitter and putting the time in to make sure that is delivering the right results.

Peter's given me the answer I needed really.  Just wondering why we have so many 'unusual' followers Sad

I look at who's following me and I also look at who they are following.

I completely agree with Peter about also looking at their tweets to get a feel for them.

I generally tend to follow most people back. I love the serendipitous nature of random connections Open Mouthed Smile I also have 2 people who I follow on Twitter who are sort of mentors to me and both awesome guys and really nice too. I've met them both in real life and they are as nice in person.
I'd recommend you follow them too.

You'll see they are really well connected and they also tend to follow most people back.

I was followed a while back by a guy who looked interesting and so I followed back. A few weeks later he contacted me out of the blue and commissioned for a piece of consultation which was worth over £1,000.
Like I say, I LOVE the serendipitous nature of random connections.

I have written a blog post about how I use Twitter - which may be of interest to you. http://blog.dickiearmour.me.uk/2010/08/my-twitter-presence.html

To manage all the people I follow I create lists so I can dip in to the various conversations.
I would never recommend using an sort of auto-follow / auto-unfollow software. It's not about the numbers. It's all about the connections and having conversations, providing interesting content and being an advocate of others who over time become advocates of you.
