I only have experience of the Galaxy S and S2 (I have the S and my girlfreind has the S2). If upgrading from S to S2 then don't bother... as far as added features go you pretty much only get a flash on the camera and it seems a bit faster to process (not sure on the tech specs). If you are jumping from RIM then the S2 would be my choice... it takes about 3 minutes to understand how it works and is about as close in look and feel to an Iphone as copyright will allow (apparantly). I know you don't want an Iphone but it is a well thought out design at least.
Just make sure you switch off the non essential GPS, Blootooth etc as these are all switched on as default and really eat the battery. |

As you know I have the S2 and love it, but there are rumours of the S3 being on the horizon - It might be worth waiting for that instead |

Looking like the Galaxy S2 is the winner so far... which gets my vote out of your choices there. IMHO, it's the best android phone out there just now. As mentioned though, the S3 is out soon - probably Feb March time, so it would be worth hanging on, if nothing else, just to get a cheaper S2. For what it's worth, I'm a pretty dedicated iPhone users, but I'm currently running an HTC Titon on WindowsPhone too and I'm surprisingly impressed. I KNOW! It's a very different feeling interface and if you've not played with one, I'd try it before you discount it. Really nice multi platform social media integration. Good luck. Stuart |

Is the Galaxy Nexus an option? Better, bigger screen than the SGS2 and Android 4.0, the best version of Android yet. If not, the S2 hands down. Knocks the other phones out of the park. But the S3 is due to be announced at Mobile World Congress next month, although it won't actually be on sale till April/May.

All I can say is that when I first had my S (totally standard apps pre-installed - including maps and navigation but not used) the battery was drained in just under 1 day with almost no use at all. I then turned off bluetooth and GPS and the battery life went up to almost 2 days including a bit more "playing" to get a feel for the phone and downloading apps.
I did the same with my girlfreinds S2 and her sitsers Samsung (cant remember the model of that one but physically smaller than my S) and got the same results. No other stuff was switched off.
Sorry for the thread hijack BTW :)

For the money the Wildfire S is a great phone (will cost you half the amount of Galaxy S2). Having had several HTCs I'd stick with them - all been brilliant - I'd add the HTC Sensation to your shopping list - comparable to the S2. That said the Galaxy Nexus looks a very nice bit of kit, as long as you get a mid to high end Android phone you won't go too far wrong. |

My other half has the original Wildfire and the screen res makes my eyes vomit. Plus it's really, really slow. Android can be an awesome OS, it just needs the best grunt, so I'd say go for the one with the most grunt. Windows 8 phones are (IMO) about to overtake Android in terms of 'desirability'. |

Yeah as much as I've seen, the GPS only activates when you run an app that uses it. I don't know about older versions of Android, but I know on v4 you can see GPS usage and that confirms it. Bluetooth is definitely a drainer though.

Hi Lee, I recently upgraded my phone to a Samsung Galaxy - from Andy Kenyon of Manor Communications, who have been my phone provider for about 10 years now. I did move away once, but soon went back because the service is absolutely brilliant. They are independant, and review the usage/billing regularly so that I know I am on the best contract - it takes all the pain away. The reception here is apalling...but I think the phone is now set to flick between orange and 3G, so the coverage is spot on. The prices are good too.
Good luck with your quest. |

Well I've had an iPhone, blackberry and a Samsung s11. I'd have to say the Samsung is by far the best. My only comment though is what do you do with it? If you need security in what you send and receive I'd advise a blackberry as the level of encryption is the best of any mobile. |

No-one voted for the ace ... so i got one!
Seriously though, I eventually went for the ace as orange wanted £250 plus £30 a month for 2 years for the S2.
I am seriously impressed with it. Ace is so much faster and I've already spent too much time/ money in the app store! Damn quality machine, only slightly smaller than the S2 but, to be honest, I thought the S2 was too big anyway. |
