The old testament is cobblers.. Even god fans say it's not to be taken literally.. Erm.. I wonder if when it first came out is was billed as such.

There seems to be a cherry picking of what suits, when it suits in religion.

If someone is on death bed, and comes through.. The lord has answered our prayers..of they die, they've gone to a better place.

It's like blacking roulette and betting on red and black..

Thing is you bet on red and black and this happens, you are well and truly f**ked.

not a religious person (anymore) but before you start a holy war .. I think the thing between new and old testament law is such ...

'are we sitting uncomfortably ...  then lets begin'Tongue Out

old testament was Gods law ,..  sin was rectified by actions.. mainly sacrifice and burnt offerings
man screwed this up ...
god sent jesus,
jesus died and and acted  as a sacrifice for all sin
this is known as the new covenant .. the new script if you like and the resion why most christians discard elements of the old testment that are contradicted by the new testiment This is why we don't beat women for speaking in public, or banish them from the house during ' womens time'  (all in the old testement)

sadly many practicing christians pick an choose what they believe from the new covenant too.  and it drives me mad the good = miracle, bad = mysterious ways ...  I think that they would be a lot better off actually reading the bible and living by it , rather than shouting at people from street corners.
just my 2p worth ( to get the thread started )

I was listening to Thought For The Day on Radio 4 this morning and he reminded me of the doctrine of reserve. Seems appropriate for this thread.

It's like blacking roulette and betting on red and black..

Firstly, the OT was never a book like GOYA - it didn't "first come out". It's a collection of writings spanning 4,000 years.

Secondly, when someone prays they're asking for God's will to be done. If the patient lives then it's God's will, and we can be happy that our wishes and his will are in tune. If the patient dies, then similarly it's God's will and we have to face the fact that what God wants and what we want are not in tune.

Lastly, I wrongly downplayed the importance of the OT in the Science vs Religion thread. The OT points to the redemption in the New Testament and forms well over half of the Christian Bible.

I think this is a case of Live and Let Live. I believe what I believe and you believe what you believe and if those things are different who cares?

Also 'If someone is on death bed, and comes through.. The lord has answered our prayers..of they die, they've gone to a better place.'  This is similar to just having a positive mental attitude - when bad things happen sometimes that's all you have left.

well said ,..

you can pick holes in  a persons beliefs all you want but you can never say a persons faith isn't true .  They have faith.. often stronger than live its self and that is a very powerful thing.

I am all for a livery debate and a bit of fun,  but there seems to be quite a lot of threads on the site badgering peoples beliefs for the sake of provoking a reaction... I dont wanna talk out of turn but it seems like a bit of a cheep shot to me.

Totally Agree,

Brad, why are you starting threads like this? It may be your view, but it's really extremely insulting to anyone who has a Christian belief. You're not interested in the answer, only in having a pop at something.

How would you feel if someone started a "4N is cobblers" thread?

Never read it but sounds pretty terrifying from the snippets I've been exposed to.
