Adults looking for an easy way to cheat on their significant others can cover their lies by enlisting the help of a new British firm.

For a $75 fee, www.fakealibi.co.uk provides false documents indicating its holder’s presence at anything from conferences to classes, giving cheaters seemingly legitimate excuses for spending time away from their spouses.

While hiding an adulterous relationship may not be the site’s exclusive use, its primary intention is to cater to individuals who choose to be unfaithful to their partners. In other words, adulterers will no longer have to exclusively rely on their own lies in order to get away with their actions.

There is no question a market supporting this service exists, as many people are unfaithful to their partners. Some, however, may question the ethics behind profiting from such a website.

The site’s advocates would argue that the market dictates the necessity for businesses of this kind. After all, the company has not caused people to commit adultery, but instead provides a service for people who choose to partake in such activities.

Opponents, however, would argue using “free market” economics to justify the site’s creation would be equivalent to justifying the activities of a cocaine dealer on the basis of user demand.

It seems this site is only one example of an emerging crop of services for adulterers. Businesses such as AshleyMadison (which helps link would-be extramarital philanderers) and Secret Lover Collection (greeting cards designed for people other than husbands and wives) are captilizing on infidelity.

Athough these two companies offer cheaters products and services, fakealibi.co.uk seems worse in that it facilitates and possibly perpetuates cheating. One might project that if this industry is lucrative, it could create a virtual empire of deception.

From a wider perspective, the existence of such businesses indicates that people are finding it difficult to be honest with each other. After all, how many people can say they’ve never stretched the truth to attain something they desired? Perhaps these services are available to support a dishonest society, where lies are increasingly hard to pull off. The site provides a paper trail through which liars can trace their stories — which is often the most complicated aspect of living a lie.

In an ironic twist, the website also offers private investigation services. Through the combination of the two services, the company could essentially profit from an affair if the wife hires a fake alibi and the husband hires a P.I. to bust her. The couple could effectively be strung along for a profit.

Since adultery is not illegal, the government cannot — and should not — regulate sites such as FakeAlibi. While no one can deny cheating happens, to capitalize upon this problem is simply industrializing deception.
