Morning! So I have recently purchased an IPAD 2 and I wanted to know what the best alternative to word and excel would be - a few peeps have mentioned Numbers but anyone else out there have a suggestion before I purchase? Thanks in advance! |

Pages for text £6.99 each, I think
whilst you're at it:
Get Goodreader (£2.99) http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/goodreader-for-ipad/id363448914?mt=8
an excellent viewer for all kinds of documents incl PDFs.

At the risk of sounding unsympathetic, Ipad is a poor substitute for a PC. If you are used to using Microsoft, why invest in Apple? None of the programmes work the way you want them to and it is really very difficult to word process, purely because of a lack of up,down etc. Basic functions a normal keyboard can cope with. It is great for education (ItunesU being my favourite app behind dropbox at the moment) and great for presenting a client's case file to them (dropbox) and great for researching on the move, however in terms of sitting down and concentrating for something it is not such a good idea. I've finally settled on not bothering to word process on it. I did use OfficeHD for a while and found that to be the best of a bad bunch but that is pretty much it. You would have thought that they would work out an HMTL based editor. By the way, using google docs and editing through the browser interface is free and possibly the best solution as at least the html editor preserves the formatting, a lot of the apps cannot deal with any kind of formatting without inserting their own code into the document, rendering it unreadable to other programmes. |

Office2 HD does what I need it to do on the iPad . However, I don't use it to produce finished documents, just to get some ideas down, produce drafts, etc while I'm away from the computer. On the spreadsheet side, it's fine for simple stuff.
So on that front, I tend to agree with Daniel, although I do use an Apple keyboard with it so you can get more normal keyboard functions.

I downloaded a free app called Documents Free (Mobile Office Suite) by Savy Soda. Does documents and spreadsheets. There's a paid for upgrade that will do more than the basic, free version. Can't vouch for spreadsheet side, but have used it to write notes which are autosaved in a .txt file. Dropbox to the the computer and off you go. |

Oh dear - here we go, the old pc brigade wheels out the dinosaur argument that is based on brainwashing from using Microsoft. Firstly an iPad isnt a pc, a laptop or a netbook - The iPad is a tablet - which is a totally new category of mobile computing. Ive been using an iPad for over a year now and it has made a massive difference to my business in both efficencies and cost/time saving. For a start it has 12hrs battery for a start (laptop maximum is 2-3hrs), it's designed from the ground up for cloud computing - which is where EVERYTHING is going. The iPad is great for almost all tasks. I use my iPad to manage my business, theres some amazing apps avaialble from customer survey software to time management to handling all your social media. I was going to get a new laptop before I got my iPad - and boy i'm glad I never bought that laptop! For £600 you get a hell of alot more than a laptop! Give me a call on 07725 170994 and I can help you make the most of your amazing new iPad.

Hi Warren Download Dropbox for Ipad and then get CloudOn that allows you to manipulate and create microsoft documents and then sends them back up to Dropbox. Lovely! PS. lovely comments by Pete above. How many people get a hefty laptop out at 4n meetings? I use my ipad in lots of my 121s ... flexible, friendly and shows off our lovely design work beautifully!

Helen is correct: my two penneth here Michelle: CloudOn is likely to get shut down soon. Don't get too reliant on it. Microsoft are suing as they are breaking the licencing on the software to provide the service. Also, going to have to monetise soon as virtualising Office on a big scale ain't cheap! |

One reason I have an ipad - ipad - click it is on pc - click - it thinks about being on for a while. As you get old those minutes waiting make it hard to retain the thought I had. I have lots of other reasons but I am not going to fight a pc / apple battle. I have both on my desktop, more apps than you could believe. Each has a role and is better at one thing that another. Move on. |

QuickOffice was now bought by Google. I wonder what this means for its pricing and the availbility on iOS anyway. |
