HELP please....

My partner has been told to try a wheat free diet by his chiropractor.  If you have met Haddon you will know that he likes his food and eats well, particularly after going to the gym.

When you really start to look at it wheat is in sooooo much - any hints or tips would be much apprectiated.

Thanks in advance

Michelle

Think you need the legend that is Sue Worrall on the team.

Must admit, can't imagine Haddon's face when they told him!!

Hi Michelle,

Most supermarkets carry wheat/gluten free options in their specialist dietry sections. It really is a case of reading labels carefully though - particularly sauces, gravies and things like that. Most restaurants can tell you what on their menus is ok for you, but it can be easier to ring ahead and find out.

Watch out too for takeaways - some fish batters can cause problems! And some sweets!

Also try the coeliacs society for info on gluten-free (which I think is very similar to wheat free).

Michelle,

Try  any of the low carb diets (e.g. Atkins, IPD). and only go down the fresh meat, frsh fish, fresh veg and diary aisles in the supermarket. (making shopping faster too as the majority of aisles is processed carby foods). Avoid processed foods are you never know what has been added.

Or don't eat beige coloured foods (natural colour that is). Grasses (wheat, barley, oats, rice, etc. ) are not human beings natural diet.

Hi Michelle,

My partner has a wheat allergy and she says:

Choose bread or cereal with spelt, rye or oats (grains/flour as applicable).
Most major supermarkets have an aisle with gluten free products
Nairns supply gluten free oatcakes and they have this useful page (+ gluten free recipes): http://www.nairns-oatcakes.com/gluten-free

The coelliac organisation have this useful page: http://www.coeliac.org.uk/gluten-free-diet-lifestyle and there is also this site (http://www.glutenfree-foods.co.uk/) which seems to be quite useful (with recipes and tips etc.) Hope you find this information, erm - useful, yes I can see I am over using that word!

Good luck,

Phil

Adam - don;t worry Sara was being sarcastic as we saw Sue Worrall talking about nutrition last week and she is 100% against Atkins!

Thank you everyone for your advice.  I am not sure how long he will stay with it (he has gone to a client chinese meal tonight!) and to be honest not sure if it is an issue for him... we will see.  In the meantime I am supporting as best as possible and appreciate your recommendations very much

Ok good, there's so much bad advice out there with nutrition!  But yes, any diet advising consumption of animal products is healthy is ridiculous advice not backed up by any peer reviewed studies.

Do a little research on these gents if you are really interested in this stuff....

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Dr Colin Campbell, Dr. John McDougall, Jeff Novick (RD), Dr Dean Ornish, Dr Pam Popper, and so on....

You're right there is a lot of misinformation out there, and probably more there is factual.

BTW how many of these guys are in the back pockets of the big food manufacturers?

Hello Michelle - his possible wheat intolerance could be due to gluten sensitivity.  My advice would be to read anything by Patrick Holford and avoid gluten.  Also, as a believer in all things natural, put your trust in one of Nature's Gifts - live, bioactive Aloe Vera juice from Forever Living Products.  It has wide-ranging health benefits - particularly for anyone with a gut problem.  If you'd like to find out more, give me a call on 01202 822035 or 07947 685785 or at www.wessex-aloe.com

Good luck!
