I am sitting here on the train back from london after a site visit and wondering how people can do the journey each day from Medway. It is an hour and a half each way, and coming up here was standing room only!

I normal fall out of be and drive the 3.5 miles to the factory in ten minutes, which is great.

How many of you work from home or have to travel to and office and how long does it take?

Not sure whether I count as working from home at the moment, as I do need to walk out the front door and in a separate entrance...but total commute is ~30secs.  This will (fingers crossed) be increasing to a whopping 3 mins as we're on the brink of getting a commercial property along the road.

I did the London commute from TW for 18 months, ~50min train journey, ~1&1/4hrs total door to door each way (I was lucky and didn't have to get tube).  This seemed shorter than average for people working in central London, but was 2&1/2hrs out of my day, every day...or the equivalent of one extra working day every three...when you put it that way, it starts to sound like a massive time burden.

On the plus side, if you can get a seat it's a great chance to read the paper/a book and wind up/down at the beginning/end of the day.

My office is the extension to the back of the house, so about a 10 second walk.

But like a lot of people I have to go out and visit clients all over the country. With a bit of forward planning I use this travelling time on the train to do work that I wouldnt normally get around to. So the amount of productive time lost to travelling is minimal

I have a 30 - 45 minute drive to the office - depending on whether its term time or school holidays.

I never fancied the commute to London (from Margate it would have been about 2 hours each way although a bit faster now with the high speed rail for part of the journey), so I went for a city closer to home. Canterbury is a lovely place to work.

Bus to office in town - 15/20 minutes depending on which bus I decide to get. If I've been at a 4N meeting that can stretch to nearly 40, but I don't mind - I can usually do bits of work (emails and such) while on the bus!
