Hi, I live in an old farmhouse with very thick walls. I'd really like wireless internet access anywhere in the house. Can anyone suggest a router that will work?

Many thanks Smiley

Without a site visit, no but if you are having problems try a router, then I think they are called powerline. I will look it up.

The basics are you use your router Plus powerline socket to send your signal down your main socket. You can buy power line socket that can use cable or wirless and cable. So you can use any socket in your house. Cost a few pounds but beats a poor signal.

Robert Google powerline Lan adaptors,

if the walls are so think this Should solve it, you can sit in any room just move the adaptor or buy a couple.

You will need to read up on it a bit, and shop around for the best price, you then should get a better conection wired or wireless depending on what you buy.

Another vote for powerline adapters.

I have thin walls in my house, but they seem to be reinforced with lead or something that stops any wifi signal making it through.

I bought some Netgear HomePlugs originally but these died after a couple of months.

I then bought some Devolo dLAN homeplugs about 5 years ago and am still using them today. http://www.devolo.co.uk/consumer/17_dlan-highspeed-ethernet-ii_starter-kit_product-presentation_1.html?l=en

While you can get some that one end emits a wifi signal, it is better to get a Cat5 one then plug a Wireless Access point in to it.  As should you wish to change things in the future this gives you more options.

Plug one in to your router, then plug the other one in to a Wireless access point in the room/floor you want to have wifi in.

This is how I have mine configured:

[www]---[router]---[dLAN1]============[dLAN2]---[switch]-----[Various bits: Wireless Access Point / PC / Network Hard Drive]

Now I have connectivity everywhere :)

I've just in stalled a TP-Link powerline kit. Not my first choice, but they were the only ones I could lay my hands on that sould wi-fi adaptors as a single unit.

They worked really well and solved the problem for my client.

Ha devolo, Made In Germany. One of the companies which was closely involved to develop the standard called HomePlug.

(I'm just having a pedantic moment, may I just add: It s NOT PowerLine - PLC. Something entirely different, apart from that data is transmitted over electrical lines)

Just becoming involved in a new business, a funeral directors, so I haven't been on for a week or two.

Devolo is by far and away the best brand in my experience. We use them, our customers use them and never have problems.

The signal can't really cross an electricity meter, but can traverse a switchboard (consumer unit).

Some (cheaply made) extension cords can block it, you should normally plug them into a wall socket.

Rob, I had a similar problem a few months ago. On advice from here, I went and bought Devolo units from PC World, working a dream.

See, I told you the forum was worth using!
