Hi

Not including any meetings you attend because you're in the area travelling for business or on holiday, how far would you travel from home to a Breakfast meeting?

I'd be interested to hear everyone's experiences. I'm travelling about 50 miles to a meeting today as I want to experience some other meetings than just my local one.  Do others do the same, or am I just mad! Smiley

When I joined 4N I loved the fact that I could travel far and wide. The network wasn't as big then but I used to regularly go down to Bristol (70 miles) and across the bridge to South Wales (100+).

As 4N expanded the network and I got more confident 4Sighting I would travel even further and one week 4Sighted in Weston-super-Mare, Harrogate and Edinburgh.

Was it worth it? I picked up my biggest client (Barratts Shoes) at 4N in Tewkesbury where I met the person who went on to be their HR director and picked up clients all over England and Wales. Also got a national reputation as a speaker which continues to pay dividends.

Sorry for the evangelical reply but I love the fact that this network can be local, regional or even national. They want to put that in the script really.

:-)

I normally draw the line at 1 hours drive. Otherwise it totally wipes out the morning.

Hi Carole

One of the things that  I love about 4N which incidentally, I went to my first meeting last Thursday and was so impressed I joined the same day, is the fact that you're actively encouraged to travel. One thing I've noticed on your website is there is no geographical area defined. It may be you cover the whole of the country, and if so,great...but I'd tell people on your website! It will also help you with your search engine optimisation  as most people tend to look for service providers in a given area.

I am a business broker and I have a number of buyers with funds available  looking to buy engineering companies, and there is still a huge manufacturing base in Wales,so I will be hopping over the bridge from Bristol  to Cardiff,Newport,Cwmbran, and Chepstow over the next few weeks.Believe it or not,I have no shortage of buyers......just a lack of sellers. So far,I've been to three meets......two in Bristol and one in Marlborough. My thinking is that I will choose a home meet in Bristol, and then travel to other meets, but not to be so busy networking that it affects my core business.

Best wishes

David Winn-Morgan

From Honiton I used to travel to most of the SW groups. Even travelling within Devon, Honiton to Barnstaple was a 100 mile round-trip! 4Sighted at Bath (125 round) and Swindon (230 round), but the furthest I ever did would have been the Chessington launch (300 miles round trip).

Of course, if I booked into any meeting now, it would have to be a 14,000 mile round trip!

Furthest i've been is Newcastle, tying it up with a mini 4sight tour, and a potential new client meet.

If your business is national and you have meetings all over the place, always worth tying it up with a 4n meeting to get the most out of it.

My business is very very local, most customers come to me. So they will only traval 10-12 miles.

So the longest one I do is about  18 miles one way.

Some really interesting comments.  Thanks to everyone who took the time to share their experiences.  Interesting that no one has said that the rising fuel costs have curtailed their travels?

If any of you feel like venturing to Yeovil, in Somerset you'd be made very welcome at our breakfast meets. Smiley

I try to limit an hour drive each way, and furthest I have done is Chepstow which was around 45 minutes but I need to do more Bristol and Midlands groups.

I have stopped going to every local meeting because of fuel costs and time, so I now have my regular 3 meetings and do others when I can,

I carry out the management of blocks of flats within a hours drive of our office. This gives me a good coverage of Kent, East Sussex and SE Londond. The 4n meetings attended are within that radius too.

Abkut an hour or so maximum - that limit is partly due to time but mainly it's just that there are more than enough groups within that radius. If I particularly wanted to attend a meeting further away there's no reason I wouldn't.

The 3 groups within my area range from under 5 minutes to about 20 minutes away. I'll perhaps get to 1 more meeting a fortnight, so I'm left with more than enough choice within an hour - plenty of Manchester/Cheshire groups, over to Wrexham, down to the Stoke evening meeting, or (as I've done this morning) Buxton.

My business is quite local so I would only travel 20 miles or so, otherwise I spend all my time travelling and not seeing clients.

I generally keep my meetings to within 1 hours drive.

I have visited groups further away if im working in the area, I had meetings in Northampton once and decided to visit the group there (nice group and breakfast was good too). Make use of the passport!

I have half a dozen groups within about 30-40 mins of me so I tend to stick to those ones. Every now and then I go a bit further afield, but not really more than an hour - I am not really a morning person and find leaving the house earlier than about 7am a real struggle, plus as someone else said, the longer travel times tend to wipe out the whole day because I'm shattered by the time I get back!

I also feel that there's plenty of business in my area and if I start networking further afield I'll end up losing out through costly return journeys, with petrol as expensive as it is - it would have to be a pretty meaty project to make the travel expenses worthwhile. On the other hand, I do have lots of customers further afield (including one in Germany) as a result of online networking!
