Work the room. Not in a good way, but in the "grab peoples' hands & shove a business card in them" way. Luckily, I only tried it once before deciding I couldn't bring myself to do it again. Now I just try to make new friends & help people.

I think the vast majority of advice is bad advice, if you are not being yourself and selling through the room then you are basically doing it wrong

I recently read a book on networking techniques that covered everything from looking at the way people stood in groups to making sure you said x, y and z and asked for a follow up meetings. I had the put the book down and walk away from it because if I tried to remember it all I would either be a robot or I would be tripping over my own toungue trying to remember everything I had to do.

An old rule of training is:   Don't speak too much or explain too much about what people should NOT do. 
The reason: Involuntarily they memorise it and might behave contrary to what you want them to do (or what is good and correct).

I am therefore not sure if we should indulge too much into this. Tempting as it is.

And the other side of this particular coin: "don't talk about yourself at all. Ask continuous questions about the other person and their business to ensure you establish your interest".

Having been on the receiving end of people who seem to be doing an impression of Magnus Magnersson conducting a CIA interoggation, it's just frankly unsettling / creepy. 

It's a conversation ffs, it doesn't require 'tactics'.
