There is a theory that if you spend £1 in your big name supermarket only about 2p to 5p goes back in to the local economy, however if you spend £1 on locally supplied goods from local shops the local economy its is actually worth about £1.75 to the local economy. Sounds odd I know, but if the local supplier and producer respending that £1 on supplies, investment and wages that same £1 goes through the local economy several times.

So I try to buy local first, then British and then elsewhere

And if you use the economic theory of "propensity to spend" then that £1 is worth even more.

Using local suppliers and local produce makes economical sense on so many levels.

Any chance to hear some opinions on the  B2B aspects?
Should I have used some more real business terms in the subject line? --->   supply chain, procurement, purchasing department, cuff links (oops)

When it comes to B2B, product-wise I imagine every business buys (albeit indirectly) from overseas.  I don't think the UK manufactures too many mobile phones or computers these days.

Services - India springs to mind, but as a whole it doesn't have a great reputation.  Call centres where strong accents can cause issues, SEO services where huge numbers of links are put in place from dodgy sites, even accountancy services...probably a lot of the bad press is unjustified.

I imagine we're like most small businesses in that the vast majority of services are bought from within the UK, and most products are bought from UK suppliers, but no doubt they imported them from overseas.

Here you are then...

With business purchases I probably think less about buying locally but actually end up doing it more often in terms of direct purchases. Much of the time I'll be giving priority to people I trust, so buying from people within my network - inevitably there tend to be more local people in that list than not (and certainly British-based). Of course, if you track things back down the supply chain they may not be quite so local - ink and paper suppliers to the printers I use for example, or the fact I'm sitting in front of an Apple computer using lots of Adobe software etc. There are bigger priorities than whether something is locally sourced though so it's not something I particularly think about at that point.

My answer is much simpler. I'll take the "don't care" option. Horses for courses every time.
