Has anyone used this CMS program? A client of mine wants to use it and I've had a look around and I'm lost? I'm not that technical but I've used CMSystems before but I'm lost with this one. I want to be able to change the design of the site but not the structure but how? Not sure its working that well on a Mac either. If anyone has any experience maybe they could help me? I think my client is doing it to cut costs but I don't think it will considering I've got to learn how to do it i'd rather let someone with a passion for code do it :D maybe I'll have to convince my client to do it the way I stated in the quote! |

HI Rachel, It's not difficult to understand, but it is difficult to alter it! I played with it over christmas, as I too have a customer who uses it for his site? Basically it is a template, (CSS) although in versions to 1.5 it seems to use tables for a lot of stuff, aparently this will change in version 2 In the end I gave up trying to understand it fully, and just purchased some tmeplates to use. I have a site http://www.limbtec.com/joomla/ which is about as close as i could get it to our main site (just remove joomla) This was done by editing the html in the template before uploading. I'm tied up with a conference at MS tomorrow, but if you want to know more just drop me a line, I'll pick it up and let you know what i found out. There are some editors which tiein with dreamweaver (these did appear to be for the PC though) Martin |

Mike - this'll help.... - Joomla! is a free, award winning, open source content management system written with PHP for publishing content on the world wide web and intranets using a MySQL database. Joomla! includes features such as page caching to improve performance, RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, polls, website searching, and language internationalization. Personally as long as my website's got pretty pictures on and is in colour I'm happy |

Hi Rachel, Does it specifically have to be Joomla? We use a CMS called Dot Net Nuke which is very similar but based on .net. It is Open Source the same as Joomla and so there aren't any license fees. We quite often wrk with design companies/agencies where they do the design work & we implement the design in the CMS. Feel free to ping me a message if I can help. Ta, Steve

Hi Steve Yeah unfortunately it does have to be Joomla as my client insists on staying with their current hosting company who provide Joomla. I've tried to get in contact with the hosting company to see if they'd do the coding but I'm sure they're just a supplier I really don't have the time or willing to learn a product that I'd only use once so I've come to the decision that I need a coder who can do it for me, paid of course! Rachel (cheers Ian for the compliment) :D |

Joomla is great - I use it for most of my sites. Its not the easiest CMS for novices but i prefer it - especially if you know some basic coding |

Quote: Dump Joomla and take a look at WordPress. Agreed. After reading so much about it I got some books on Joomla, started from scratch and over time built three sites using it. They were clunky, buggy, slow, had poor browser compatibility, weren't W3C compliant and Google hated them. I'm sure if I could have spent hours amending them but just out of interest built a small site on Wordpress. It delivered everything that Joomla promised but failed to and its building in strength and features all the time. Out of the box it's just so much better. Mark

Or as an alternative to these (good) CMSs use a great one. www.cmsmadesimple.org. (Ok - I am bias as I am one of the development team, but over 1,000,000 downloads and the winner of the PACKT publishing 'Best CMS 2010' is a pretty good vindication. Joomla and Wordpress are previous winners too in their defence, but this year we wiped them off the board.) ;-) |
