Is this the Future of the Gig Economy? To Uber and Beyond!
Gig economies like Uber and AirBnB are one of the fastest growing industries in our economy, providing greater flexibility for businesses and a glut of short-term, casual work. But, how will these economies be affected by recent landmark employment law cases which have judged that Uber taxi drivers and City Sprint cycle couriers are not self employed but actually workers and, as a result of those decisions, are now entitled to employment rights like holiday pay and minimum wage!
Apaprently one in seven people now classify themselves as self employed and if network meetings are anything to go by, the number of people joining the self employed ranks increases daily. The Gig economy extends far beyond Uber and Deliveroo and as far as I can tell it is on the rise. Coincidentally, doctors report that one in 6 sick notes are given for mental health reasons. Is this just coincidental?
