Fair to target Tesco? In all honesty, I don't know!

The numbers being talked seem small, but I don't know anything about the economy of that part of the world. The plea also mixes hourly rates and per kilo rates, which leaves me uncertin about what is really being proposed. A good picker should, surely, pick something like 50kg/hour?? Is this proposal to go from 38p/hour to £2.88/hour?

What I can be sure of is that paying an extra 5p per kilo to the pickers will multiply to an extra 50p per kilo on the selling price in Tesco. Once price increases get back to our own shopping bill, I am sure that people's charitable intentions might be a little different.

I can also give some first-hand experience from the other side of the world. We have family & property in the Philippines where we grow rice & tobacco. Workers there get about £2/day. That is the normal working wage and people DO support themselves on that for the one simple reason that the economy is much poorer than the west and we get a very good exchange rate. What looks cheap to us is not necessarily cheap where it happens.

What this story really needs is more information.

Yeah, I think your right Steve its easy for certain rights groups to pluck certain information and use it in this sound bite way, trouble is the passing viewer like me sees it and has a WHAT!! reaction without knowing the full details.

Thats kind of why I asked the question because I don't know the full details or if it right or wrong to attack Tesco's this way, anyone?
