(You'll have to bear with me, bit of a lenghty one) Okay first a little background - I ran my own biz as a freelance web developer from July 07 til around Jan 09, at which point I found myself at a bit of a crossroads. I'd been burnt badly by a couple of clients and had things going on in my personal life, so when a company I'd been doing some outsourced work for suggested I merge my biz into theirs, I was lured by the "security" of a monthly salary and the added comfort that would give me at that particular time. The company I joined specialised in business support, so bringing me in added a whole new "department" so to speak - and from the getgo it was extremely profitable and things started booming. I'd always, however, had that itch that never goes away after you've ran your own business -but at this company, I ran my little area with a self-employed mindset. Then, things started to change - a series of events which upended me completely, and reminded me that in reality, employment is less secure than self employment. So, my mind started wandering back towards thoughts of going into biz for myself again; and I started hatching plans so that should it ever happen, I was prepared. Around about the time GOYA came out, I was extremely conflicted; by day I was trundling along, completely caught up in the everyday activities my role required. By night, I was full of thoughts of my own business, but convinced I'd never make the jump. Then I read the book... Don't get me wrong, GOYA doesn't expose any deep dark secret about business, and doesn't claim to - but what it does is give you food for thought - rocket fuel - an enormous kick up the arse to grab hold of your situation and do something about it. I picked the book up at 11pm to start reading it, intending to skim over a couple of chapters and go to bed. Stupid o'clock in the morning I put it down having read it cover to cover, absolutely bursting with ideas, my mind made up that I was going to leave my job and start my biz. So, plans were perfected, phone calls made, and on December 17th I handed in my resignation. Turns out I made the right decision, as last week the company folded out of the blue. This meant fast-forwarding my plans by a couple of weeks - involving lots of late nights and excessive banging of my head on my desk; but because I just knuckled down and did it rather than put it off til my originally planned launch date, I've pulled everything together and today I'm proud to launch Mimo Media Ltd - my brand spanking new design, web and marketing company. Far be it from me to sound like I'm sucking up, but Brad has been a major help and influence through this - not only from reading his book, but from the support and advice he's generously given his time to dish out; and thanks to 4N I have a massive support network around me who have all helped hoist me up and push me to make this a reality. The business launches today with 3 clients already in the bag, and 3 more from 4N in the pipeline - and that's before I even get really going. Over the past month or so of planning this, as cheesy as it sounds, I've actually had to question whether it's all real, because things are falling into place so beautifully - but it's not because I'm just getting the rub of good fortune or riding a lucky streak - it's because I'm actually grabbing this thing by the balls and making stuff happen So, there we have it, my GOYA-inspired story so far - congrats to anyone who made it all the way through my rambling, and heres to an awesomely successful and ridiculously fun ride in 2010 and beyond!! |

Thanks Mikey. awesome fella, you're a perfect example of a biz that can have accelerated growth now with the 'transferable' network you've built up since you been 4Ning. Much appreciated on the kind words front, that what i was hoping GOYA would do. You ain't gonna go hungry, it may be tough.. but you are never going to starve. GO continue to make it happen fella! |
