Next door neighbours of the house in Halifax thought they were doing us a favour and chopped down a hedge (without permission -- I'm checking with the ex -- ... house is empty) and have left everything in our back garden.
It's an absolute state and it's been cut too big that it doesn't even fit in the back of a car. I've been quoted £120 for it to be taken away which is an absolute joke.
What do I do?!?! I have tenants moving in later this week so regardless, it needs shifting!

Does the local council collect green waste for composting? I know a few councils offer a collection service

I chopped down some trees (about 15 that were about 4m high) and hired a van for the day to take the remains to the local land fill. Cost me about £50 but was a lot of lumping and dumping (about 5 or 6 loads)

If you have a male mate that is willing to do it for some beers, I think that would be a good bet.

Thanks Carl, I have a feeling it'll be too much short notice to get the council to do it. Plus, my experience of Halifax council tells me they don't give a crap.

Smart thinking Amigo, that's what I thought too! But how annoying, having to pay £120 for something the neighbours did without asking and have just left there.

Tony, Gareth - just saw your posts after I already responded. Tenants are moving in tomorrow, sooner than I first thought! I don't live in Halifax anymore and I can't even get there tonight. Boyfriend isn't the smartest crayon in the box so I'll not even mention that to him. £120 it is.... Apparently the police can't do anything as it's a civil matter. Not sure what I can do really....!

Yes, it's been explained, I just feel really bad that it's all there on their first day of moving in! I can't believe they cut down the entire hedge in our back garden! It wasn't in their way or even near their garden. They've entered our property and chopped it down from the roots!!

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

EH? How did they think that was a favour?

I guess it's going to have to be burnt (that should please the neighbours), chipped or taken to the dump. What you need it a 4n'er who has a large van who can shift it for you.

You need to be hard and send the bill to your neighbour up there. Why did they cut down a hedge that wasn't theirs very peculiar - it is a police matter - it is called criminal damage and if a neighbour does something like that is pretty serious. You would certainly have a case for compensation if you wanted to bring it. [loss of the hedge, cost of cleaning up, replacement plants etc.,]

Did the neighbour end up with a better view, more sunlight or some other advantage by cutting down the hedge? legally the hedge is yours, but the cost is theirs.

Yes, they used to whinge about it when we lived there but it was legal in it's height. They'd often chop the tops off for us which was fine, but taking it down is a whole different story!

in that case - get the job done, receipt it and if possible photograph it and let them have the bill
