Hi all

Was the reason you got into your own business, ultimately, to make a profit?

Because once you make that profit, you can help your friends, family, and yourself to have a better standard of living, and a better quality of life?

Like me, did you decide that you wanted to do what you were passionate about, whilst being your own boss, working to your own standards, ethics and morals?

Well here is a very simple but dramatic idea to help you increase your profits by 30%, quickly and easily - it's part of the modules I use to help my clients grow their business:

Lets imagine you have a company with (for simplicities sake), a

turnover of £ 100
costs are say £ 90
profit is therefore £ 10

Are you aware that you can take three simple steps to increase your profits by 30%?

Step 1
increase your prices by just 1%
That's not unreasonable, is it?

Step 2
increase your sales by just 1%
That is easily achieved, isn't it?

Step 3
Decrease your costs by just 1%
Again, simple to shave off just 1%, isn't it?

Here's the effect:

1 - turnover increases by 1%, to £ 101

2 - turnover increases by sales activity above, by a further 1%, which in round terms, makes sales £ 102

3 - costs reduce by 1%, taking costs down to £ 89

4 - Profits have now risen to £ 13, in other words, a 30% increase in profits.

Created by just 1% increase in sales, 1% increase in prices, and 1% reduction in costs.

,

turnover - £ 102
costs £ 89
Profit £ 13

Increase = 30%

So, I have three questions to leave you with:

1. What happens if you increase your profits by 2% (or 3% or 4% or 5%) rather than 1%?

2. How big is YOUR turnover just now, and hence how much would a 30% increase in YOUR profits mean to you?

HI Glen,

Nice post. Just to let you know, in your signature section at the bottom of page, you have www, instead of www. Just went on your website and had to change it when copy and paste.

Cheers and have a great day 2.

Well pointed out Glen, it's all in the Maths. Go for 2% everyone, and my message to anyone here still in startup mode is "you're probably pitching your prices too cheaply anyway".

It is a great tip. I am not knocking the advice at all.

However this just shows what is meant by lies dam lies and statistics!

The maths does not scale. Take it up to 1000 and you only get 29% take it up to a few million and it goes down further.

Yes, you're right.

but it does frustrate me when clients complain that they're only getting a free 25% increase in profits on a million pound turnover! ;-)

some people are SO hard to please :-)

thanks for the feedback though - it's a good tip, and I welcome communication.

As we teach in NLP, "the meaning of communication is the response we get" ...

have a fantastic day (wow, did i sound American just then lol)

No, he's just rounded a couple of numbers along the way.

What you may want to consider is that this only really works for small profit margins...

If in the example your costs are £10 less then you'll only see a 15% increase in your profit, another £10 less and it's 10%. Of course if like Tesco you only make 1p for every £100 turnover then you could see your profits increase by 30,000%!

Then again, I think that it's a good principle that it only takes small changes to make an impact.

Have you considered using photographs to advertise your business?

I produce photographs of people, commercial photographs and still-life / product images.

Give me a call and see how better photographs can set you apart from you competition.

I wasn't knocking the advice nor getting away from the message that if you you make a couple of small changes you can get massive results.

Just pointing out that mathmatics are not always what they seem.

Sorry

Some very good and practical advice.

I agree with Dave about pitching fees to cheaply, especially at startup.

This is one of the first tips in my recent blog about how a business can improve its profitability.
