I have an idea for a web site that lots of people need,it would need to be able to accept small payments, collect information given and display some of it on site, and handle contact requests.

I would expect this site to earn most of its income from advertising, i have ideas for a further 2 sites that would be spin offs and more lucrative.

These sites could easily be replicated in other english speaking countries, and world wide later.

I need someone to build site(s) and get them live, renemeration by of share of business

Would you rewire my house but I can only pay you when my house is sold, I don't know if it will sell and how much money will be left after I have paid off my mortgage and the fees, but I will hopefully have enough to cover your fees.

Sorry for sounding a jerk Brian but I hear these "ideas" so many times and they always promise money if the site makes money. If you really believe in your idea then pay to get it online.

Brian I see your up my way, small world eh, tell you what, I won't be able to help you to build the site but I will be an advisor, tell you my opinion on your idea and throw some advice how to get the site online, I will even sign an NDA if needed (done that a couple of times).

PM me with your pitch and I may be able to help you out I build sites pro-bono sometimes but it depends if its a viable idea or not. Most are not but I never refuse to entertain the possibility that it might work.

Seeing as I have over 14 years online experience, I have seen this so many times ... and it fails.
Like any business, you need realistic goals and expectations not a simple 'ads will pay for it'.

If you really are convinced it's a winner, get a loan/ grant etc to pay for the development/ design.
Don't expect anyone of quality to give up their time for something like this. It simply doesn't happen.

I'm not being negative, or saying that your project won't work, but I see these offers many times a week and have never had anyone come back a few weeks/ months later and say "i told you so ..."

Ditto, Not a knock but honest advice...

If you can't convince a backer based on your extensive data then it's not worth you risking your own funds for.

Like Lee we see many many people with great ideas for web sites and guess what only one or two have succeeded and they have had to pay their way!

If these ideas were good then the people who could impliment them well (the web developers) would have done it themselves.

Guys, give him a break. I get asked all the time to do this and some I do and some just are not able to cut the mustard. Its not always about money, or shouldn't be. I said I was happy to look at his idea and if it was worth it come to an arrangement. I have another similar deal sitting on the back boiler waiting for a bit of a time window to finish what I started and this woud not be any different.

It may well be the idea is not worth the attention but, at least I am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt until I hear his proposition.

So was I, hence saying I would give my opinion on the idea, but unfortunately 'pro bono' doesn't pay the bills. Any credible idea would have some sort of financing behind it imho.

Agree les, it's not about the money.
For me it's always about a long term business.

As you'll agree, we get emails using these exact words all the time.
As I said, not being negative, just offering real world advice.

Gareth, not all credible ideas can obtain financing.. The OP is calling for participation. If you are not prepared to do that why are you posting?

Cos I have done pro bono work and have made a success but the partner went back on the agreement and sold the site. I gave my experience / advice and offered to to help with the idea, I don't mind helping someone with ideas and to try and make them work.

I am not slating him, or putting him down as his idea may be the next paypal or facebook but some reality is needed, not a lot of people will work for free for no guaranteed income from the sites.

Gareth, I'm not interested in your experience in partnerships, start another thread and we can all discuss that at length but. all Brian wants is a web partner and to all go on about how its not worth doing if he hasn't got the money to pay you is crass. If you don't do pro bono work, don't post on threads that are in the CAN YOU HELP and asking for pro bono work. Simples!

I do a lot of work on this part of the forum pro bono, I don't look for payment and I help as many people as I can. That's why it is here. If I choose NOT to help I DON'T POST - Simples!

no offence intended

Some years ago I was approached by a young lad who was working at a PR company client of ours. He wanted to start his own design consultancy specialising in annual reports and wanted us to be investors/business partners in this new venture. At the time we had a successful business and did not need to invest in some hairbrain venture and so we politely turned him down...He now runs one of the most successful design companies in the country. Now I will consider seriously any deal that comes my way and I am more willing to invest time and experience into someone with a vision however unlikely it is, they could be the next Google, facebook or Ebay!

Hi Brian

I don't think CBJ Digital would be interested in being paid with a share of the business. However, we are very experienced in website development. So if you did want a half hour teleconference and we can help you firm up on a spec or bring you upto speed on the latest technologies that might be appropriate for this project - do please drop me a pm.

Good Luck
