moving office and broadband

So we are moving into a new office over the weekend, but painfully the broadband could be ANY time this week. I have an 'orange' internet dongle but the connect is soooo slow, has anyone any suggests. We have tried connecting onto the neighbours but we are too far away?

I did the same 4 years ago when we moved from Lancs to Somerset and ended up without broadband for 3 weeks, so my advice would be to find soomewhere loacl with a good free/low-cost wifi and be prepared to camp there to work online. I know that's a tad pessimistic but I'm a little sceptical about these matters :)

You could maybe find someone with a 3G mobile signal booster they could lend to you. Buying one is a bit steep.

Depends on the locality. If the (several?) neighbours accept, run an Ethernet cable from them over to your office. Can be up to 100 m long. Will that do? Is that possible with the buildings involved? Doesn't look good but for just 1 week might be OK.

I agree with Mark, you would not believe how many people ask me to relocate them one or two weeks before they are going to move and even days sometimes. We can get a line and ADSL installed usually within 10 days but you really should look at 20-30 working days.

Another thing worth looking at is a dongle on another network. You should be able to check your postcode on the main networks websites to see the expected signal you will get. You need to find one with a good 3G signal. It could be that Orange is crap, but Vodafone or Three are better?

If you have a Blackberry you can use it as an IP modem cheaper and faster than a dongle

You can use any smartphone as a modem but it won't be any better than a dongle.

I'd try the above suggestions - no point buying anything for such a short time.

The last office move I did was delayed by 4 weeks because BT neeed to run additional overhead cables but no-one from BT had actually bothered to undertake a site survey to determine this, until the engineer arrived to install the telephone system. What a laugh!

I agree, 2 weeks is normally ample for Openreach to get a new line in and the ADSL live, but I try to allow 3-4 when planning.

Thanks guys for all the responses, there is no way a cable can go from our neighbours as it is a self contained unit! I only have an iphone not a blackberry! What a pain, why does it take so long for the company to switch it on, our phone lines are working so surely the broadband can go on any time?

When we provision broadband it takes 5 days - some providers it is 10 days. It is possible to fast track a broadband order which will speed the installation up by a day or too, but at around £150 it makes it very expensive for an extra 2 days.
