At 10pm last night I had a recorded (voice from text service) message that, as of today, police will be fining you £60 if you're driving a car with snow on the roof.

Because it was an 0845 number I thought it was a hoax, but on checking it does seem to have been a genuine BT message service. Not that I plan on taking the car out today - or the rest of the year for that matter...

Whilst I agree that its dangerous for it to come flying off when driving and hitting cars behind you, surely the police cant just make up laws and this has to be passed as official first?

I suppose they have to get revenue from somewhere this week as I don't imagine they will be catching many speeding motorists!

I vaguely remember hearing something like this at the beginning of the year. Whether they'd actually fine anyone unless it was particularly dangerous (ie. they'd not bothered to clear enough snow/ice to see properly) I'm not sure. Similar to them being able to fine you if your number plates are obscured by snow or dirt I suppose – they're likely to just tell you to clear it off as the paperwork would take longer to complete than just getting it sorted

It boils down to driving with an unsecured load. If you put anything else on the roof of your car without securing wouldnt you expect to get fined?

Just because you didnt put it there it doesnt stop you from being responsible for removing it.

Quite right Carl and a FPN, (Fixed Penalty Notice) doesn't take long to complete. If you have loads of snow on the roof then at some point it will come off and potentially either obscure another drivers view or slip down over your windscreen and obscure your view. 30 seconds with a broom solves the problem and gives the engine a moment or two to start warming up as well.

How about if it was roped & sheeted down?

That's very useful info...I had to go out this early morning and took the broom with me to the car to brush off the roof snow!

Surely this is just vehicular prejudice, what if you don't have a roof on your car? or if you are running an open-topped 4x4 or a 40' box, tarped, or flatbed? or a car transporter with cars loaded to the gunnels. - get up there with that broom 20' in the air on a ladder? the words 's$d off!' comes to mind.

How on earth did we cope the last 50 years before these considerate PC rules came along..... man up you lot.... its all part of the driving experience - if you are hit from snow from the car in front - FFS put some distance between you.

Driving today, I'm actually going to disagree - the number of idiots trying to drive a white marshmallow, only being able to see out of a small clear spot on the windscreen made me realise that this is absolutely a problem and the cops are right on this one.

Book em.
