I've been working with a number of 4Ners on their business goals using what is known as a Provocative Proposition.  It involves writing a day in your life/business at a point in the future as if it's happening right now.

The idea is to start it with "Today is [day], the [date] and I...." and to describe your day on that date with a full sensory experience, evoking sight, smell, sound, taste, touch etc.

I have written two.  The last one resulted in me becoming a Director of 4N, a dream job!  And the interesting thing is that 4N didn't exist in my world when I wrote it!

How does it work?

The subconscious mind does not know the difference between what is real and what is imagined and if you can imagine something in your mind vividly, the subconscious not only believes it to be real, but it will then direct your behaviour to that which is conducive to that outcome.

Try it!

Interesting.

Is this in any way similar to something that has always mystified me but for which I'm very grateful.

If i have a business issue/problem and don't instantly know what to do I load up my brain with all the facts and forget about it.

My brain then seems to work behind the scenes and creates order out of chaos and I seem to automatically know what to do.

That is because what you think is real and what is imagined is one and the same. The product of the same mind. What you think is real is thus limited by your own brain (the hardware) and your mind (the software). The brain is limited by the individual and us (homo sapiens) as a species, while the mind is conditioned by an individual's culture and the broader society. A bit like you seeing words and pictures on your computer screen - when they are but binary codes, interpreted by the hardware and software of your computer.   Life is just an illusion.   :))

Makes me want to watch "Inception" again thinking about this Tamsen. Some interesting research in the USA across all profiles about this projection, based on adding audio to a visual feed and measuring brain activity. Nearly everyone narrates what they are actually seeing by adding in about 60% from their own memory - sort of proving we all do see the world differently.

So I suppose it would make perfect sense to harness this rather than resist it - so the technique could be used to improve how we create our own lives and shape the world around us. Focused athletes such as discuss throwers have been using this technique for decades, spending hours visualising the perfect throw - and in essence building into the brain the equivalent of muscle memory.

Be really interesting to see what feedback you get?

I read this earlier and thought about starting all day, it felt as though it would be a bit of a pain to do as I wasn't sure where to start.  3 months time will be the day before my birthday so I started it from there.  I have so far filled 4 pages and still going!

I spent so much time planning and visualising life from 3 January. It all went dreadfully wrong. I am now trying to visualise 1 May as the real start point, 5 months in, but in reality 1 June is more likely to be it. So much easier when you don't depend on other people for infrastructure and support!!!!!!!!!!!!

But the vision is still there and the issues are just being worked through - so the visualising has kept me grounded even if I am really really p**&*& off!

Hi Tamsen – you’ll recall going through this with me last October. It’s very powerful and things are happening – not necessarily quite how I expected but it is working!

Hi Chris

What you describe I think is something else entirely as although there is intent to resolve the problem/issue, there is no specification of what the outcome looks like and instead simply faith that it will be resolved in the right way, but essentially doing nothing..

A Provocative Proposition has intent in the actual outcome and sensory experience to engage the subconsious mind to direct behaviour (i.e. do stuff) to achieve it.

I often experience the same thing you do and too am always grateful!

I'm currently writing my Provocative Proposition.

I have had a lot of changes in the last 5 years and the next 5 are going to be great.

I have decided this and am going to write down my expectation.
