Computer People - help me
| Posted: 14th May 2011 - 21:56 Quote | |
Today I decided to take my computer to PC World to have a new 2gb ram added, they said for an extra tenner they will install it and check it over so, I said go for it - 15 mins later I go back and they said, when the computer is turned on it has a clicking sound that detects a problem Is the correct? or more to the point it this like a failure error sound to stop or warn on possible major possible failures? The result was a new PC as this was my main business PC and I basically had no choice However; I used the computer for 4hrs and turned it off correct before going to PC World at 1pm - how can the computer fail in 1hr when it has worked fine for ages and only in the said morning?

Oh Dave!!! PC World. How could you? Have you got your old PC back? You need to speak to either Paul Kelly or Pam Case asap - both local to you. A clicking sound on boot up is often the hard disk not reading. That could be for any number of reasons - including them having dislodged something while fitting your RAM If the PC is fixable then take the new one back and get a refund - your credit card company should help you with that if there is any problem. |

Fully agree with Michelle. take the PC back and get a real engineer to sort the hard drive out. It could just be re-seating a cable. Good old PC World, and to think I only recommended them yesterday for a new laptop! |

I'd agree with whats said above. It's possible that the PC took a knock while being trasported from your Home/Office to PC WOrld and this has damaged the Drive or Dislodged the cable. But if it's still possible to boot into Windows then you can Clone the Hard Drive onto a new one and swap the old drive out. Infact at the same time you can upgrade the drive to a bigger size. |

"they said, when the computer is turned on it has a clicking sound that detects a problem". Was this before they installed the RAM? Did they mean a click, or a beeping sound? Beeps that stop are alerting you to errors, repetitive clicking suggests disc. I doubt if they started the computer before banging the RAM in, so my first port of call would be to go back and say "what have you done to my computer?"

PC World - when will people learn. Surely there are enough IT companies on here that no one need use these half wits. The good thing about PCs is generally if one bit goes you can just replace that and not the whole system. Get a professional to look at it and make it your mission to tell 10 other people to avoid PC World! |

Hello Guys - thank you all for responding I am very sorry for having to go to PC World but, when I have a problem on a Saturday afternoon and need it fixed by Monday morning, it was a case of having a loaded gun at my head I have had to replace the PC and all day Sunday have been loading all the data from the saved file to the new PC - Pi...ed off is an under statement I do still have this problem - can anybody help? After loading Microsoft Outlook and downloading all my contacts / emails etc - when I press send / receive nothing is sending or receiving so, how do I fix this? Just to add, I have gone to my webmail account and witness 124 emails so, in theory they should download when opening my outlook account - so what is the quick fix? |

I am very sorry for having to go to PC World but, when I have a problem on a Saturday afternoon and need it fixed by Monday morning, it was a case of having a loaded gun at my head Want something quick? Phone a 4N-er. A friend of mine recently asked my help with her laptop. I said to drop it round but she forgot, ended up taking it to the nearest PC World (which is like 15 miles from here) for them to say it needed a new hard drive and they needed to send it away for two weeks. TWO WEEKS! They sell the 2.5inch 250GB SATA drives in the friggin store! *boils over with rage* I hate PC World. I might be biased, but that's how it is. For future reference, you'll get a much faster response from the 4N IT guys then you ever will from PC World. With regards to your e-mail problem, make sure you're setting the POP3 and/or IMAP up correctly and that it is in fact connected to the net. I don't mean to be patronising, but the amount of times that has happened does make me question my own sanity.

Which version of Outlook is it?
With 2010 it does not default to the main PST file, but rather creates one per account. SO you may be looking in the wrong place. Do you get any error message when you click send and recevie? Check the bottom right corner of Outlook when clicking Send and Receive. |

Chris - No error messages are shown and yes the send and receive function at the bottom right appears - however; no emails are being sent or received including spam and spam comes every day - so what do I do now? |
