There are now over 200,000,000 tweets per day, every day, only 18 months since Twitter passed 50 million tweets per day and only six months before that 10 million per day.

Eric Schmidt of Google said recently that we now create, every 48 hours, more written content than we created between the beginning of time and 2003.

200,000,000 tweets per day (2,400 per second) is as much content as 8163 copies of War & Peace per day, or a book of 10 millin pages. So Eric Schmidt probably wan't far off.

Staggering! However I expect the meat of those copious tweets is utter tripe (much like War & Peace)

Depends what you consider tripe really. A lot of what people say is really interesting and valuable.

I love Twitter. It really is a fascinating resource. And I'm with Mr Thomas, lots of it is very interesting and valuable to boot!

A bit like online forums - it's all about sorting the wheat from the chaff.

Quite so, and everyone's definition of what is wheat and what is chaff is different of course.

The problem with Twitter is it moves so fast it is easy to miss the wheat (and the best bits of chaff)

Realised I've been using Twitter for nearly 3 years, it really is a valuable little resource for me now for all sorts of reasons. Can't imagine it not being around.
Quite nice to think I've contributed some 'tripe' to the 200,000,000 tweets per day Open Mouthed Smile
