We aim to achieve top page positioning on Google for keywords (search terms) targeted by our clients. These keywords should include the main services or products on offer.
A business website needs to be on the top results page of Google for its targeted keywords if it is to bring in useful additional clients and business because:-
- Google performs more than 80% of searches.
- Few searchers look beyond the first results page.
The position of a webpage for a keyword search on Google depends on its relevance and authority. Relevance is determined by the words used in the visible text on the webpage and in the underlying coding – particularly the Page Title tag.
Links from other websites convey authority to webpages and websites. They also contribute to relevance by the anchor (linking) text. The authority of a webpage is determined by the total value of the incoming links to the specific webpage competing for a keyword and to the website in general - domain or website authority. Authority is more important than relevance.
PageRank is Google’s indication of the non-keyword specific authority it gives to webpages. I believe that website authority is best indicated by the PageRank of its HomePage. As HomePage PageRank is usually higher than that of internal pages, it tends to be more important. There is evidence that Google gives a boost to HomePages that are competing for keywords. This can be compared to the handicap system in golf that assists lesser players.
Keyword difficulty is a measure of the strength of the top competing webpages for a keyword. My professional website (2womenshealth.com) offered me opportunity over the last 12 years to investigate how Google positions webpages in its results pages. From my research, I developed a free technique that determines keyword difficulty according to a combination of webpage and website PageRank. The technique averages the combined website and webpage PageRanks authorities of the webpages currently on the top Google results page for the keyword. An automated program that analyses a list of keywords using the technique – Keyword SEO Pro – is available.
Beware of programs and unscrupulous optimisers who cold-call you or spam your email box claiming that they will get you to the top of Google for any keyword you choose. Genuine optimisers will acknowledge that such claims are bogus: Nobody, including the top programmers at Google, can guarantee top positioning.
“4N is 50% business and 50% social.” For me it is nearer to 75% social. I have made a lot of friends and learnt a lot from them about their business aspirations. Most websites underachieve because they target over-ambitious keywords that are well out of range – chasing after the rainbow rather than picking the lower hanging fruit.
I offer a complimentary SEO report for colleagues in 4N.

I have been involved in computing from the mid-1980s and provided the medical input to local, London and even national projects.
In 2000, I developed a health website for my patients giving them access to the more detailed information many required. There was simply not enough time to provide all the information many patients needed in the 20 minutes available in NHS clinics. I retired from the medical profession in June 2012
Developing the health website has been fun. It receives 1.5 million visitors annually. A bonus was that it brought in many patients to my private practice.
