The Lean Sigma approach can be applied to any workplace, be that in manufacturing or the service sector. However, to be successful there are a number of key stages which should always be followed:

• Define the operation
• Measure the standardised operation (find cycle time and amount of in-process inventory)
• Compare measurements against requirements
• Innovate to meet requirements and increase productivity
• Standardise the new, improved operations

CAUTION Measurement should be the means to improve understanding, not to set arbitrary targets.
 

GEMBA is a Japanese word.

• It means ‘the real place’, or the place where ‘value’ is created.
• In business, all value-adding activities occur in ‘Gemba’. That could be the lab or design table in business development, the shop floor in manufacturing or the retail outlet in service provision.
• Gemba is the source of vital information!
