EDUCATION- UNIVERSITY OF LIFE:  I left school at 15 to help look after my sister & brother,. I really wanted to stay and take my GCE’s but dad said no. Eventually my father relented and let me go to work and college. My first office position happened through the kind help of a neighbour whose disabled daughter I looked after. The position entailed checking/proof reading orders & invoices before they were posted. A year later, promotion to the accounts section and learning the NCR accounting machine. Then followed two foreign banks a couple of commercial companies and many temporary positions through recruitment agencies.  Fast forward, two children later, barmaid, Avon representative & more temporary office jobs.

As most of my husbands family members were involved in roofing it was a foregone conclusion that a timid young woman (as I was at the time) followed suit. This led to the purchase of an old Olivetti typewriter bought from the local paper in the under £10 column being placed on the dining room table.  Letters offering roofing services were sent to small builders, Bexley Council, (Maintenance Division) and a Housing Association. Fast forward 30 years and successfully  managing a small family roofing & building firm,  suddenly in January 2007 after many years of coping with Lupus SLE my consultant said to me, “ I am sorry to inform you but you have Leukaemia AML” and will have to come into hospital for chemotherapy straight away. Treatment in an isolation room for 3 months loomed, with the possibility of temporary discharge at the end of each month for a week if I was well enough. How I managed to get from the hospital in Farnborough, Kent to Suzi’s Wig shop in Lakeside I will never know, what I did know though, was that once my hair started to fall out I had to look presentable, even lying in bed. (Funny how vanity creeps in amongst the fear)

Nothing prepares you for 24 hours a day, watching the clock hands slowly move forward, but what were the choices, fight to live or give up.  A bone marrow transplant, infections and shingles saw another three months in hospital come and go. The word remission was mentioned and the bedroom at home beckoned for long-term rest and recuperation. Fast forward to 2010,  the recession & many business struggles later the dreaded word relapse showed its ugly head and another month of chemotherapy, bone marrow and loss of hair began. This time although petrified of the inevitable I ordered a mobile broadband dongle and took my laptop into hospital amusing the doctors and nurses with my bed being the centre of a virtual mobile office. Throughout each day peals of laughter were heard coming from my room as the nurses went about their daily duties being wonderful caring angels.

Today I am in remission and give thanks for each new day. . My eternal gratitude goes to the wonderful consultants, doctors and nurses at the Princess Royal Hospital, Chartwell Unit, Farnborough. Kent and King’s College Hospital, London for their amazing commitment, care and dedication.
