Haystack Productions is a video production company set up and run by me …. Joanna Shimwell. After graduating with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and working as a freelance journalist and videographer for a while, I decided to start producing videos for my own clients; hence Haystack Productions was born!
Where it all began….. My passion for video really began at University where during my final year of study I produced a video documentary. This was on a topic of my own choosing, and was researched, filmed and edited by myself. It was during this process that I learnt how to become a ‘one-man-band’ or a one-person-crew, able to take on a project from the initial idea for a video and see it through right up to the final product. I found this process extremely rewarding and despite being very tough at times, this cemented for me that I wanted to go on to produce more videos in this way.
From seed to harvest…Although I have and do work in teams of people, the majority of the work is do is as a one-person-crew. This means I nurture a project through every process – speaking and meeting with potential clients, scripting and storyboarding a video in the planning stages, before filming and editing together the final product and handing it over to my customer! I have achieved great results working in this way and it means my clients and I form a great working relationship. I ensure my clients receive a personal service and this means I am fortunate to have clients who keep coming back to Haystack time after time with their video needs.
Why Haystack…? The idea for the name Haystack Productions came about as I wanted to reflect both where Haystack is based and my attitude to work. The Haystack headquarters (or Haystack HQ) is based at Dale Farm, near Bakewell in the Peak District. It’s a truly beautiful place to live and I love it! Surrounded by fields and rolling hills, it’s a peaceful place that provides a quiet, undisturbed environment for editing videos. And when I need to take a break from work, my door opens out onto a country lane lined by fields where I can often be found wandering around with a cup of tea in my hand seeing what the farm animals are up to! If you choose to follow Haystack_HQ on twitter you will find a mix of video and farming related updates, which pretty much reflects my life and what I get up to!
I think the connotations associated with the word “haystack” reflect my attitude to work – farmers are notoriously hard working and I definitely come from that stock! I also took inspiration from the idea that farming is all about a nurturing process where you need to take great care in every stage in order to reap the rewards when you get to harvest time: this is my approach to video production. Every project I undertake is tailored to the client’s needs and I put great care into the planning and execution of each stage in the video production process to ensure the final result is a video that everyone involved is proud of.
