How to Use Your Personality Strengths at Work

With the right attitude, in a career that suits your personality, you will succeed

OK, so if thats the case, then why is it that so many people arent happy in their current roles? A good question!

Well, it seems to go wrong when most of us are at school and here our story begins

Most of us remember what we were like when we were young: parents dont understand, and things like jobs and families are years away. Youre too busy trying to impress the opposite sex and keeping up with the latest fashion or computer game. Its much more important to be wearing the right trainers than it is to be getting good marks at school or thinking about what career you might take up.

Our research indicated that one of 4 reasons often dictates which job or career path we follow and this depends upon the choices we make around the age of 14. The reasons are: -

1.      What our family wants us to do
2.      What our friends are doing
3.      If we like a topic at school, especially the teacher
4.      If the homework is easy

Once on a set course at school, it can be difficult to change over, and so we put up with our lot and try to make the best of it. For some people, this works OK. They complete their education and might be lucky enough to get a job soon after leaving school, college, or University.

But for many, this is not the case. They have no idea what they want to do with their lives and amble from one day to the next with no clear goals. Eventually they find work but it is often the result of a lucky break rather than a careful plan. Time goes on, and then one day they wake up to the fact that they are not productive at work, they are not effective, and actually they dont like what they are doing and never have done. They realise theyve just become used to the role over the years and kind of moulded themselves into a comfort zone from which they are afraid to step forward.

Does this sound like you or a member of your team? Then read on because

We Can Show You How to Succeed in Whatever Career You Choose

A lack of understanding

During 30+ years of business experience enjoyed by our behavioural profiling expert, Elaine Godley, she has met hundreds, probably thousands, of people who were unhappy in their jobs. She found that one of the biggest problems, affecting how people work, is the common lack of understanding about what makes us tick.

Our personality and our attitude are the main attributes that can either make us very miserable and poor, or successful and wealthy.  If you understand your own personality type and can recognise the characteristics of other types and what makes them tick, then you can make sure youre working in the right environment that suits your personality and natural behavioural characteristics.

Put simply with the right attitude, in a role that suits your personality, whatever career you choose, you will succeed.

Elaine wanted to establish how she could support individuals to find their role in life as early as possible, so that they have an enjoyable working career and avoid the mid-life career crisis which affects so many of us. She commissioned an in-depth study involving schools, teachers, careers officers, parents and of course, the students. The results led her to create two companies who specialised in behavioural profiling for the education and corporate sectors

Why is Personality SO Important to Understand?

We spend a vast proportion of our lives in the workplace. If we work with people who have a pleasing personality, then this makes us look forward to going into the office each day and to see our colleagues. On the other hand, if there are some individuals displaying a miserable personality, then they pull down the rest of the office and no one looks forward to going to work, let alone being productive and efficient when we get there.

According to the dictionary, personality refers to someones distinctive qualities or character. In fact, we all have distinctive qualities. There isnt a soul alive with the exactly the same personality as another. There might be similarities, but we are all unique and special.

By understanding the different personality types, we can communicate in ways that suit the personality type of who we are dealing with. For example, some types prefer to have lots of detail, whereas other types will be put off if you give them too much detail. This information alone can help your sales team to meet their sales targets and your staff to get along better with each other as well as with your clients.

Daniel Goleman in his book Working With Emotional Intelligence suggests from a number of research projects with businesses emotional competencies were found to be twice as important in contributing to excellence as pure intellect and expertise
