Structure in the garden in the winter

I often hear people say that there is nothing to look at in the garden in the winter, but for me, its the winter that starts the design off.  Without the structure of the garden being right, nothing else hangs together and of course, some of the structure comes from the paths, patio, pools and summer house but we are missing the point of the garden without the plants.

When I start a new planting plan I always start with the structural plants - maybe the trees, shrubs or evergreens, something to look at all the year around and preferably to intice us out there to have a sniff at the wonderful scent of the sarcocca confusa or to look the amazing droplets from the garrya elliptica. - Is your garden giving you all year round satisfaction - if not give me a bell.
