Networking Basics: Being Personable
One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to build their business networking referrals list is simply trying too hard.
Here is what not to do:
Unless you are at a networking function, do not include your business name along with your own name when introducing yourself.
Do not hand over your business card or marketing packet before you learn the other person's name.
Do not, under any circumstances, ask a person to subscribe to your service, join your mailing list or do any sort of activity that would result in the exchange of money or personal information before you have developed real working relationship with the other person.
Here is what to do:
Smile and be friendly. Get to know each person as a person before bringing up business. Not only does this leave a good impression of your personality but it shows your potential business contact that you are not desperate (even though you might be).
Unless they ask you for your card, do not offer it until you have obtained theirs. Shoving your business card at people who haven't asked for it is unprofessional and your card will likely end up in the trash bin.
If your sole goal when attending a networking event is to build your business networking referrals list and to lengthen your subscriber-base, set up a booth to do just that. Attend the event as a vendor, not an observer.
These are just a few tips to help you be personable at your next networking event!
