Parents, Do You Deserve The Teenagers You Have?

I have been reading Penny Palmano's book "Yes. Please. Whatever!" and one of statements she makes is this:

"(Teenage) behaviour is a barometer of how we dealt with them (teenagers) as children and how we deal with them now. So, always remember, we only get the teenagers we deserve."

Do you have teenagers? Are they the kind of teenagers that you thought (expected? they would be?

What are your thoughts about the above statement?

We gave our 4 kids zero tolerance if they stepped outside the 'boundaries', and because our boundaries were nice and big, we all had a happy time as they were growing up.

An older lady gave us some advice when we had no. 1 kid - 'Win every battle!'.

Another way of looking at that was to never enter a battle we could not win.....

For example, take your kid on to the beach, and tell him not to get sandy, or not to get wet.....

Or tell your kid if he does that again, he wont be going that holiday or whatever trip is planned, and will happen come what may.

Its a bit like playing the piano, I think. You only have 80 odd notes, and you are free to play them in whatever order you like. But, you will only make a pleasant sound if you stick within the boundaries of the laws of music.

Go outside the boundaries, and its not pleasant - for anyone!

And in case you're wondering, the kids are now 21, 19, 15 & 12. So , we aren't out of the woods yet, but so far, so good!
