I've started using an Owl/Electrisave meter that monitors the amount of electricity you use. I think this is a good idea and it works for me and the rest of the family now.
It's incredibly quick and easy to start using. There’s a small device that you simply clip around a cable next to your meter, which then transmits a signal to a display that you can move round with you anywhere in the house/office. Quite simply, the display tells you how much the electricity you are using actually costs.
Inititally I thought, 'So what?', but after a while you start to notice what uses the most electricity and it becomes obvious where you can make savings.
I have also used it to identify when things we might not have noticed have been left on, when they should have been off, because you can see on the display that you are spending money on something you are not using.
Worth a try. Some Electric companies are even supplying them free to customers so worth checking first but looks like you can now get them from around £30.
The ovious one is the kettle. Flick it on and the reading shoots up to over 35p per hour, from a base reading of around 1-2p per hour. BUt you also notice it on certain types of lighting, especially in commercial offices with strip lights.
