Invite People To Private Forums
Rather than waiting for people to stumble upon your private community - why not invite them to join. Here's how to do it.
- >> My Account > My Communities
- Select the forum you would like to invite people to and click "Manage Users"
- At the bottom of the screen is something called Add User - click "Select" - a window should pop up
- Search for that person (first name, last name, company name)
- When you have found them click "select" (window will disappear)
- Most of the time leave the radio button on Approved - this is what you will want a normal user to be - you could immediately ban them or even elevate their status to moderator if you want them to help police your forum.
- When you have finished click submit - they will get a PM telling them you have approved them and a link to your forum.
Remember if you have 4 private forums and you want the same person to been in each of your forums then you will need to repeat the above process 4 times. Permissions are set per forum.
Advertising
- Put a link to your community into your forum signature
- Put a link and description in your profile and or biography
- Tell people about in posts (if appropriate to the conversation!)
- Advertise it on other sites
- Mention it in your 40 second slot (breakfast meetings)
- If a post would be better placed/served in someone elses community then make a link to other community and encourage them to post there. (This works in reverse)
Rules
Maybe you don't like "txt speak", maybe you don't like swearing and maybe you hate people writing in BLOCK CAPITALS ALL THE TIME. If you want people to follow guidelines then put a sticky topic in your forum telling people what to do and what not to do - that way if they break your rules and you ban them you can say "I told you so".
Definitions
- Users
- Approved Users - Users that can access your forum and make posts.
- Banned Users - Users that have no access to your forum.
- Moderator - Users that can edit other peoples posts on your forum.
- Forum Types
- Public - Anyone can view this forum and any 4N member can post.
- Private - Anyone can view this forum but only approved 4N members can post. Anyone can invite themselves to your forum but you will need to give approval before they are allowed to post.
- Invisible - Only approved 4N members can view and only approved 4N members can post. 4N members cannot invite themselves (they can't see the forum!) so you need to invite members to join before they can post.
Need help with anything else?
Post it here and I'll add it to this post for everyone to see.

Reckon people should try to get in the habit of cross promoting where possible for related forums? so for example;
1) someone asks about garden related stuff in my furniture community
2) we post a link to the garden forum etc? if it is related..... and vice versa!
What do you guys reckon....?

Have you looked into allowing users to add their own custom style sheet yet? Would be especially helpful for design business who can easily showcase their talents just by the look of their forum.
Of course, selfishly perhaps, I just want to choose my own look. :-)
