WEBSITE SUPPORT [Google Analytics v Matrix Stats]

Now here's a really techy question!!

I subscribe to Matrix Stats and also recently using Google Analytics to see which are my most "sticky" pages, and visits to Downloads and Resources pages etc etc.

Obviously, the main thing I want to know is - How many visits are there to my sites?

Compairng Matrix Stats and Google Analytics, there's a HUGE discrepancy.  Like by 200% !!!

Google is showing less visits than Matrix.

What's going on, folks?  Which is the most accurate?  And why the enormous difference in stats?

I'm guessing Matrix is recording visits from the Google spiders whereas Google can detect their own and miss it out from your stats?

I think so yeah, it'd make sense for Google to filter out their spiders, giving more reliable results.

I've never used either system though, so don't take my rambing as reliable advice, haha.

I use statistics provided by my hosting company.

Somebody reccommended me CLicky - it's about $2 a month. I used it for a trial period. Showed live hits as well, that was interesting.

Stat counter is good for live hits, but it wouldn't give me the other information.

I want to know which are the "sticky" pages, and also where the referred hits are coming from. ie I can see what traffic is coming from 4Networking, that's motivating!

Technically they are all wrong. You can't record a 100% accurate figure. I think analytics is more accurate but what ever you look at as longs as you compare figures from the same place you can spot the all important upward trend.

Personally I prefer Matrix Stats. Ever wondered WHY Google is giving analytics away for free?

Same reason as why they originally built their toolbar: to better track who looks at what on the Net - that knowledge is worth billions to them!

Still not worried? Right, your innocent Google toolbar is in default config and shows the PageRank of sites you visit. You NEED that to track your own site, don't you?

Analytics keeps track of visitors to certain sites, for SEO purposes for the site owners, right?

And then you marry the two data sets together - that would be the data that Google toolbar collects on YOUR browsing habits and what analytics collects and suddenly a remarkably accurate trail of millions of Internet users appear!

Advertising golddust! You can psych-profile the data and determine with a surprising high degree of accuracy the sex, age, income group, etc. for INDIVIDUAL Net users!

There's an old American saying: There ain't no such thing as a free lunch!
