Would it ever be possible to have all external links (those in posts) defaulted to Open in a new window/tab?
Not a biggy, just frustrates me every time!

I'd thought of asking that too

I know its a pain but given the rapid rate of growth for the 4N site in other areas then this is way down list.
Solution is: Right hand click link and select open in new window or open in new tab.

The thing is, many people expect it to open a new window, and when it doesn't they have left the site and may not come back straight away. Isn't in the site's interests to stop that happening?

It should open in a new window by default, but I agree its fairly simply to right click and "open in new tab" but it's so easy to forget to do this, and so frustrating when you forget!

If you wanted to code this in when adding a link yourself Stef you can, you click the source button and you will see the address of the link inside quotation marks, immediately after this add the following target="_blank" so the link will look something like this:
<a href="stefnet.page.html" target="_blank">
It's a bit of a faff ... but it does work
