I have just spent some time with the Rep and he believes that yell.com and yellow pages are of some use and that the ROI is good.

What are your experiences?

Jorge - See another old topic I posted in but...

We jacked in our two adverts (Taunton & Bournemouth)and bought two full passports for 4N which have a ROI hugely higher than the advert which used to produce 1 or two enquiries per year and sometimes no sales.

I can hear all the 4Ners quite rightly saying it depends on your business and it depends on the actual advert - just be warned they are trained to sell space and sometimes they even believe that yell.com works!

As an Internet based company we never recommend (paid) directories as they are not frequently used - most people Google it... and their figures quoted are hugely misleading.

That said, you may have the right type of company but ask yourself would they want you to be local or not?

Totally as above, dependant on your classification and advert. One of the things we are looking into as a coaching firm is getting higher ROI on yell adverts, theres lots of little things you can tweak in there that can make it much more effective, but again dependant on business genre.

i personally have bought stuff through Yell.com - i got my loft converters from there but thats it.

i myself have not advertised on Yell.com only the typical adverts (we have just renewed today as it seems to work ok). i have only ever heard of one positive of yell.com and thats my loft man

what i would look at is other ways can you get business and what will they cost you and get back in return?

so as they say, the decision is yours!!!

Yell is very good for us logistics guys as we use it to confirm addresses + i did advertise for 18 months with them in 12 regions however the results were very low - hence we advertise with google as everybody uses this search engine (results are better)

If going in a printed Yellow pages then STOP as BT Phone book is a fraction of the costs + for the same price you can have a half page advert...get your price then challenge yellow pages for the same cost, it might work

Your post made me laugh Jorge, I did say to expect a few calls.

The idea is to list your businesses in as many places as you can both on and offline, I try hard not to pay anything, where I do I subscribe for a short period of time and I monitor the results.

It takes time and hard work, however if you apply yourself, you can find many free sources to advertise your business.

Jorge

I felt it was useful as my business was a start up, but cost me £2000 for a 5th of a page add (one in Chelt and a free one in Swindon).

They helped with ideas for the ad.  They have just come back again for next year for their pouund of flesh and I told them I didnt think 3 enquiries off YP since March and 2 off Yell was worth the money - one case actually went ahead.  They have insisted on trying to produce a "better" ad for me to decide on.

As others say they are sales people and believe their own hype!  She told me their stats showed many more people ringing my no. than I had monitored  - but she shut up when I reminded her that all the others were people trying to sell Me something.

You can pay just for a web link on Yell and perhaps thats possibly useful but still over £50 pmonth.

The other side of things is the amount of competition listed in your book - obviously there are a lot of mtge guys and some are big enough to pay for full page, double page spreads.

I'm now looking at other cheaper forms of ads - getting my website SEO'd well and combining it with flyers, car advertising, use of many forums,  networking, professional relationships etc.

All in all I didnt find it worth the cost for my field of business.

We had the same pitch, but they 'researched' that over 600 people had called them during Oct 07 looking for debt recovery company based around Cardiff.... The strange thing wa A) They couldn't quantify those figures and B) Not 1 of those 600 + people found us on the interent and rang.

Just so you know they have still to get back to us about the figures quoted and No we wont be with them again.

I used them a few years ago and for an £800 ad I got two enquiries (in 12 months) which led to a £30 job!
However, like Dave I use yell.com to check addresses.

aggressive waiting. Come o phone ring, i've done all this advertising ring.. come on. by all means do that.. but if ay activity finds you agresively waitng for the phone to ring, you probably can't afford ito fail. Do something pro-active get sleeves up, start a 4n group, take action. Aggressive waiting should not be an option to build a biz.

I am not a fan of advertising in non specific media. If you had a golf club business, advertising in golfers monthly would be good, but in a media with such a varied busienss base, it doesn't make sense. However, if I was in Jorge's shoes I'd be asking "where would I go if I wanted a PI?" Google or a lawyer would be my responses.

My experience of Yellow Pages & Yell.com is quite mixed.

Yellow Pages has in my opinion had its day & the publics use has fallen with on line facilities, hence we pulled out of Yellow pages 12 months ago and have not missed it.

We moved onto Yell.com which has caused us no end of hassle. Many many sales organisations use Yell.com for direct selling & marketing. Some days we were receiving up to 30 unsolicited calls a day, which on a freephone number was an expensive & frustrating waste of time.

Since Yell & Google parted company, there has been a huge drop off in enquiries such that we will not be renewing our Yell.com advertising in January 2008.
