Amanda and Adam Hustler
Amanda Hustler is being treated at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth for two gunshot wounds to her back.
She and her husband Adam were shot in their luxury home in a tiny Cornish hamlet.
Family friend and fellow Jehovah's Witness Tim Mears said that although Mrs Hustler had undergone a "long surgical procedure" there had been "no issue over the use of blood" because of her religious beliefs.
He added that the couple had held "strong religious convictions for decades".
Mrs Hustler is "very distressed" over what happened and is in a lot of pain, but is being comforted at her bedside by her daughters Danielle and Abigail, believed to be 20 and 16 respectively.

Businessman Mr Hustler, 41, died in hospital after the shooting on Saturday at their detached home in Porth Kea.
Police are waiting in hospital to interview a man who has been arrested over Mr Hustler's murder.
He was detained a few hours after the shooting but is also in Derriford Hospital being treated for self-inflicted facial wounds.
The 23-year-old, named locally as Jonathan Cock, is understood to be an ex-boyfriend of Danielle Hustler.

Are we back on the Jehovah thing?
I think Kims post on bereavement illustrates that faith in any form isn't a bad thing. Ok, Witnesses do appear extreme and I am sure many will read that comment and think 'Yeah just a bit Nic.' However, as extreme as it may appear to us, they have a right to do whatever they like and the plus side for this lady will be that the support system around her will be fantastic. Her faith will definitely carry her through in a way that not many will begin to understand unless you take the time to find out what this religion is all about.
I have known Witnesses, their thing wasnt for me, BUT if you find something that helps you through whatever crap is going on in your life then who are we to judge?
I think how Witnesses conduct their faith is quite honourable, they dont thrust it down your throat, they dont kill other people to get the message across, indeed they refuse to go to war etc and I know that the people I met in this religion, nicer people you wouldn't find.
Live and let live thats what I say.

Or in this case, die and let die.

I wouldn't have made the same decision (especially as she has children that would be orphaned if she were to die) , BUT, I wholeheartedly defend the right to make the choice.

I agree with Nic here - you can draw the parallel with you having to eat your kids to survive in the desert. What price life - There is a price too high for most of us.
I don't agree one bit with them and think they are misguided but I do respect that they have made that decision and although we have a duty of care to point out where they are wrong in our eyes - they have freedom of choice. I would always try to persuade them but not force them.
PS. At one time had a girl friend who's family were JW's

I don't agree.. Jehovah's witnesses are very snobby, very pushy, and very duplicitous in their actions. I think they're all douchebags.
Happy Holidays everyone :-)

Is that not like saying all Christians are the same, all Catholics are the same, all Jews are the same, all C of E are the same. Surely we can't judge any group just by our own experiences with a few people in a particular location. national and cultural influences always change the local group to be something different whether that be religion or just an organisation.

Personally I think she's deranged, but all power to her for having a belief system so strong that she can do what she's doing.
I've known a couple of JW's in my time and they never attempted to convert anyone. They took quite a bit of stick and ridicule from some colleagues but to their credit never rose to it and always answered questions (presumably) honestly

Yes, I can't see that the religion defines the person. There are a lot of Witnesses in West Oxfordshire and I was at school with a good few of them. At least they're not hypocritical, they don't recognise Jesus as the son of God so don't celebrate his birthday. I'm not sure I quite agree with the 'ministry' (knocking on my door when I'm busy) but if they believe in it so fundamentally, maybe they do want to share it with me.

"they don't recognise Jesus as the son of God so don't celebrate his birthday"
Just to put the record straight, Stef, they do recognise Jesus as the son of God. There are several reasons why they don't celebrate his 'birthday' one of them being that Jesus wasn't actually born on 25th December; he was probably born during spring. You can check this on Google.

Sheryl, I stand corrected on that point, and I do understand that the date was moved around, most likely to hijack some of the pagan festivals. Presumably they don't celebrate it in March either.
That being the case then, why don't Witnesses celebrate Christmas?

Exactly as you said - its a pagan festival and the worship of JWs is not to be compromised
