Have you done any personal development stuff? and has it helped? I've read loads of books, had speach therapy (my voice was so quiet you couldn't hear me) and been on Landmark forum. It all had some impact on the way I look at things, but not in the way I thought it would do.

Yep, Mick. Some personal development courses (ISA Experience being one in the mid 90s). Got lots of simple useul insights there that I still use. Read *some personal development kind of books (but to be honest, doing does it for me rather than reading). Without a doubt, though, my biggest development was giving up all kinds of "recreational" drugs... cigarettes....and finally alcohol. That's had the biggest impact on the way I look at things, feel things and do things.

2 biggest things I learned: What other people think of me is nothing to do with me. You can't change just by attending courses or reading books. "for things to change you have to change" Jim Rohn Business philosopher.

I did some courses in project management and business development and stuff. I didn't get much from them per se - but they did help me get over a fear of public speaking that for some reason kicked in aged about 27.
Is it handsome in here, or is it just me?

It's a totally rubbish phobia and is self fulfilling. It got to the point that pretty much every meeting I was in I thought I was going to crap twice or die. Completely pointless and without reason.

MIck, interesting thread - you say it didnt thave the impact that you thought it would - were you hoping for greater things as a result and were dissapointed or was there another angle?
Myself, I've never gone for this sort of thing but I know it could help and I should'nt be so apathetic about it - trouble is, it invariably costs money and I can think of other things I could spend it on but I'm probally being very short sighted.

Books have a bigger impact on me, as long as I put it into action. Landmark was very strange I saw alot of people having real intense lightbulb moments. I just found myself hearing things and thinking thats from this book etc, probably too analitical. Also I feel if you have real issues (which I don't) they came to the surface. As I said I did learn from the experience, but yes I think I expected something different

Isn't being analitical a real issue?

I've actually learned a hell of a lot. most of which I can't even put my finger on. all I know is I wouldn't recognise myself from 6 years ago. This has enabled me to help my cleints to deal with their issues, which is wonderfull.

I've done personal development stuff. It's called life. Having people s***t on you, going through divorce, staving off bankruptcy, having kids, battling for access rights, keeping the Inland Revenue at bay, seeing good people die, running a business, playing football and winning two trophies in 25 years, beating the grim reaper twice (I know, it could be third time lucky...) - not necessarily in that particular order. Lots of lessons learned there. I don't get time to read books, much prefer the film.

Mick, You may not be surprised to know (being Sams' partner :-)) that I have done loads of personal development work. When I had done a few years on myself I then trained as a counsellor ( using the bio, psycho, social model) during which I had to look at every aspect of myself and apply what I used on myself to others. I believe we get caught between fear and desire of many things and both cause equal amounts of difficulties. We believe the stories we tell ourselves and we constantly look for certainty. I wondered which part of your thinking you wanted to change?

Clare, Didn't want to change my thinking, I wanted to develope people/comunication skills. I was brought up to be seen & not heard, (no conversation skills) , Very few friends at school as I was a very shy child, went on to work in a factory, again with very little personal contact, been a lorry driver for 22 years where you can go days without speaking to someone, so when I started my business 6 years ago where the main part is talking with people, it was a massive challenge and learning curve, I am still learning. :~)

It sounds like you started your personal development 6 years ago when you started your business! It doesn't seem surprising that when receive a message to be seen and not heard at a young age, that we find it such a challenge to change those well worn messages after practising it for so long and finding ways to reinforce it (lorry driving keeps you aways from people), but it sounds like you are rising to the challenge anyway. Do you think it is the feelings that you find difficult in dealing with people/communication? Is it yours or their? What skills do you think you lack? Have you looked at our point of view, action, result model? If we remain open minded, every day is a class room day :-)
