CHIT CHAT [How's this for a bad day?]

This week I started on a new contract which means travelling into London quite regularly. Yesterday I arranged to meet the client at 10.30am, which meant catching the 8.33 train to ensure I arrived in plenty of time. The person who gave me site directions had said to come out of tube station, turn left and walk for five mins and it's on your left. I wrote it all down and booked my ticket, & a taxi to pick me up at 8.00.

First thing to go horribly wrong was the taxi never showed. After fifteen mins, I called and they told me they were just around the corner, seconds away. Ten more minutes I called and they told me to hold while they checked where the driver was. They cut me off. Rang back, cancelled the cab, got in my car and drove to park and ride, (five mins away but I was very late already). By this time I had already missed the 8.33 train, but managed to catch the 8;50. Left message for client so they knew I'd be late.

Got to the tube stop, turned left and walked, as instructed and walked, and walked. The five minute walk turned out to be thirty minutes, so by the time I arrived, late, I was hot & flustered too. The client was off sick!

For some mad reason, on the way back I took directions off someone at the site for a shortcut to the tube station, and got lost! 40 mins later I got to the tube, which then broke down at Baker street making me miss the train from Paddington. This should have meant a supplement on my ticket, but the conductor must have felt sorry for me and waived it!

I arrived back in Swindon at 7.00pm, too late for the park & ride buses which had finished, and the park and ride gates shut at 7.15pm, Managed to get Kev to collect my car using the spare key and narrowly avoiding a £60 release fine. I finally got home about 7.45

Clearly a day when I should have stayed in bed!

Kerry. I love you. Kev loves you. Nothing else to say.

The thing with country folk like us is we get confused in London, can't see the sky you see!

1. Don't use Swindon as a station - take a drive to Ciren and enjoy the peace of Kemble

2. Don't use a taxi!

3. Never trust directions in London, always multimap it

4. Always look confident on the tube, you can get away with anything - and then you can feel smug and laugh at the Northerners who look at the barriers as if they were cybermen

Keep smiling, you've made my day sound like tea in the park!

I always thought an extra rule Graham was "never stand up till the tube doors open" - is this one true?

Hmm - I can't remember last time I sat down on a tube!

Loving your replies - makes me feel tons better already! Michaels description just about sums it up! Still, it can only get better ;o)

As for sitting down on the tube, unheard of! Especially on the Jubilee line. Packed in like sardines and then some!

Never thought of using Cirencester, but a great idea - I will check it out.

Normally it wouldn't have been so bad with the directions, but the sat nav on my phone refused to work - technology eh?

So pleased to be back with the blue sky and greenery but I'm doing it all again tomorrow!

What a nightmare - poor you. And I can't believe that the client hadn't contacted you to say they weren't even there!

Are you still charging the client for a day's hard graft? I hope so!

Ah yes - on a day rate with this one, thank goodness!

As for cancelling the cab, I know, what was I thinking? Should have let them turn up anyway and waste the petrol!
