I have applied for 8 jobs in the last two weeks, one i called yesterday offered me an interview monday.
why do people place job adverts but then ignore applications? 1 out of 8 is really bad!! (but better than 0 for me!!)
How long do you take to return calls etc? (or do you ignore any that are over/under qualified? (i assume with my sales background i was over qualified but just applied because i was desperate, not that i am blowing my own trumpet)

I think a response to all applicants is polite. If they haven't been successful to interview stage, let them know. With mail merge, it's not exactly challenging!

Well, speaking for my own company, we do try to respond to every application, even the ones taking the piss (written in pencil etc), but not within two weeks unless those people we like the look of and invite to interview.
We had a junior developer post a couple of months back that we got 150 applicants for, according to my evil HR director. That's a lot of response letters, and I imagine it took way longer than two weeks to even weed out applicants.

I used to write to all those who weren't invited to interviews, then personally phone those who had been for an interview but weren't selected. Time consuming but, in my view, the only polite thing to do and, if they chose to listen, potentially helpful for future job applications.

You know it will go nowhere because the person you ask for is "off" that day!! how stupid is that!
Leave a message, never get the call back, what a surprise!
Being polite rocks! like stef says, anything to help them in the future, costs nothing! (landline to landline calls are free, just 30 seconds of your time)

It is politeness to respond to every applicant for a job. I have always insisted on it. However:
1. Not all companies have that policy. Some even state you should not expect a reply unless you are selected for interviews.
2. For those that do reply, it takes time, often (usually) more than two weeks as stated above.
Abeit frustrating and maybe even demotivating, as a job seeker you will not get replies to anything like half of your applications. You and I may disagree about the reasonableness of that, but it is a fact of life.
Its tough looking for a job, and I wish you well Steve. One of the most important things though is to keep at it. Work hard at it. You may well need to apply for 40 to 50 jobs to land one, or you may succeed very quickly. But its a game for the determined only.
Your experience with your own business will hopefully equip you well in the determination stakes. Its the same game. You need to get appointments, this time called interviews, and then your job is to sell.
All the very best Steve - I hope we are reading here of your success before too long.

We are a very small company of 3 and are not recruiting, but we still get CV's sent to us for consideration and I always reply. I also genuinely do keep decent CV's on file. We never know if we might need a short term bod for a specific job.
