CHIT CHAT [Mumbai attacks]

When  was last gainfully employed I worked for a comapny with an India office, and I remote managed one of the teams there. I was lucky enough to go over to Kerala for a week to meet them, and some of them have become good friends and we've stayed in touch.

Most of them are in Trivandrum or Bangalore but one guy moved to Mumbai to study photography. I've been a bit worried as he's not been online for a week or so, so I was really relieved when he popped up on Google Chat earlier this evening.

Turns out he was at the Leopold Cafe up till an hour before the attack there, with four of his friends. He left to go to a class; his friends weren't so lucky and all four were killed. One of them was due to get married on Saturday.

He's in a dreadful state and I didn't know what to say. How do you cope with something like that?

Best wishes,
Alison

That's awful Alison.  I should imagine there's very few who could help anybody cope with that.

I've been in a situation before where what is a "normal" terrible news story suddenly becomes so much more real because someone you know in real life was involved. I found the contrast was marked. Normally even news stories this bad just blend into the normal background noise of life. Once you are connected it makes you think about it differently.

That said, some of the pictures in the aftermath of the train station were chillingly above the normal levels.
