I have had a number of my websites belittled because my competitors have used data from Alexa.com to compare their ranking to mine.
I would like to set the record straight so please go to http://www.alexa.com/site/help/traffic_learn_more
"Alexa computes traffic rankings by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources."
I only use Google. If you type in 'places to visit' into any search engine you will find www.places-to-visit.co.uk is No.1.
Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm no expert, but think that a web-site needs some code installing for Alexa to register visitors. I could be wrong.
But I know that one site I have - which has far more traffic than a personal blog I have - comes far lower in terms of Alexa ranking. I'm sure I vaguely remember doing something so Alexa records visitors.
Saying all that though, if you're getting decent traffic and search engine listings, what does it matter? Probably some sort of web-site snobbery you're experiencing!

Alexa's a veeeery sketchy way of counting people's traffic. For a start, only people who have downloaded the Alexa tool bar are counted in the figures. It's mainly in America, so there's a fairly heavy bias toward US-based sites.
It doesn't calculate page impressions, only your websites 'share' of total internet traffic. Your page impressions could be increasing, but if the total page impressions on all websites increases more quickly, your rating will appear to fall.
If your competitors are bad mouthing your traffic rating, come out with some (generous) figures from your own analytics package (even google's free package is accurate) - that'll shut 'em up :-)

The ONLY accurate way is to use the stats log file from your server (all others are best approximations) - Your website hosting package should give you access to the file either in the raw state or via a viewing package that gives you details in layman's terms.

Surely the point is - does the traffic convert into clients/ subscribers/ money!
You might have tons of traffic and be number one but if no-one stays on your site or becomes a part of it it's pointless anyway.
It's not how much traffic you have, it's what you do with it!

Alexa does not only count the hots from users who have the toolbar installed. If you use some IP pinging software you can artificially generate 1000's of visitors per day, the result of this will be an artificial reading on the alexa rating.
I have seen sites that are 1 month old, no ranking in the search engines reach up to a ranking of 40,000. People do this then slap the site for sale on EBay.
By having the toolbar installed your site will be regularly updated on archive.org

That's normally correct but for a site like that the advertising revenue is linked to the popularity, so visit counts are paramount.

Spot on Claire. One person coming to your site who takes whatever action you want visitors to take is infinitely better than 1 million visitors who look at your site but do not take any action.
