Whats your non-cufflinks story, a bit of honesty share with others about the hardship you8 may have encountered on your route and journey into self emplyment.
25k in debt, delivered pizzas for 6 quid an hour, was ready to walk away 5 times...

Thats the problem.. many of us have had our challenges, yet no one wants to really share them, because percieved embaressment. I promise you from a 4N perspective, honesty works.

lol honesty is my biz.
I started my agency on a shoestring. I have never borrowed money from any source for it.
I had my car and a computer, I had to buy a camera and a camcorder.
There were times when i couldn't pay the mortgage and my GF had to pay it all instead of the 50/50 split that we do.

started with massive debt, before starting business, left f/t work far too soon based on emotion, rather than looking at my business income. ended up with no cashflow. or house, went back to work 84hours a week and have been gradualy building my business p/t around this.
could quite easily go bankrupt but would rather paybck what I owe. (call me daft but I borrowed it in good faith)

Took optional redundancy from my job of 14+ years last summer. Had then and still have now very large debts. Still struggling on a financial basis, but generally much happier now than i was then.

Made redundant four or so years ago from a senior posiiton within an insurance company leaving a very bad taste as my business unit, and me personally, were on the verge of great things, but the business closed due to global issues with the Swiss parent company.
As a result of my disillusion I decided to change direction and had a dabble in hands-on property development - everything except roofing and gas fitting (don't do heights or explosions) - to clear my head. Turned down a number of very lucrative offers of employment whilst doing so.
Set up my Estate Planning company two and a half years ago and have still not drawn any income from it (just about repaid myself my original and ongoing investment). Mortgage company set up on same basis this year and, perhaps unsurprisingly in the current market, some way from making a positive contribution.
Haven't borrowed any money, just survived on wife's income (now ceased due to baby) and savings.
Probably now unemployable.
Not quite on the 10p beans yet, but not had less disposable income since started my career. Put it this way it's a Skoda now not the 5 Series BMW any more.
Never happier.

Gave up my reasonably well paid management job in 2007 when my son's special needs were causing him so many problems at school that I needed to be more flexible in terms of working hours than employment allowed. Took on a franchise job in an industry I had experience in, regretted it ever since BUT do enjoy what I'm doing. have built up the magazine to be respected and recognised, and kept it afloat this year despite marriage breakdown, almost nervous breakdown, health problems, legal problems and my son's permanent exclusion from school. Surviving financially on tax credits and part time work with Call The Office. Now in a position to start growing the business - onwards and upwards!
Best wishes,
Alison

Can I be controversial (again)
I had a conversation with a guy today and we talked about the fact that having had previous success was a great ingredient for further success and also having had failure and got back up or come from a place of real struggle and broken through were also great ingredients. If you read autobiographies of successful entreprenuers there is normally a section on this.
My understanding of the sentiment of Brads start of this thread is to show honesty and integrity and that people can and do grow and move on and often it is the adversity that is the driver, the determinant that helps achieve that great success.
(now the contraversial bit) talking about your challenges on this thread will serve to show others that there is a way forward, that you don't have to accept where you are and that you can achieve from whatever position you are in. I for one struggle with the concept of struggle and debt being a place that you can say "you are happy with" or "have never been happier"
Perhaps your view on success is shaded or your experience of success mared.

Last property crash used my wife's redundancy cheque to clear the negative equity in London flat.
moved to Somerset and bought into failing joinery business
9 years later very succesful & then put Lexus in the ditch and lost arm, and access to the business
Good old litigation battle over value of my shareholding - sorted and got financially straight
Went back to school, MBA, biz coach, mediator, - set up Business Mediation, and went networking..
Fell flat on my face - nothing happened. Joined debtDr - something happened.
Met Brad - 4N, lot's happened!!
The journey has almost been worth the battle scars - but that's another story....

Amazing isn't it the journeys we've each been through that gets us to where we are right now and also brings us all together to share experiences like ours. Please keep them coming.
