According to Mashable, there were Twitter feeds reporting the Indonesian earthquake circulating over an hour before the mainstream news sites reported on it.

Is the web now really changing the way news is reported. Who needs journalists when anyone with an internet connection or mobile phone can report in real time, and see that report bouncing around Twitter, Facebook and blogs around the world within seconds.

This is the new world Stef.  Free flow of information, shortened communication lines, instant knowledge.

Of course, there are social changes and technological refinements before it all becomes part of our world, but its on the way!

And for business, this will mean big changes in how customers gain information. Big changes in the available routes to market.  Changes in the opportunites to build brand awareness. I believe its an exciting time to be in business!

It sounds like an extension of user generated content (UGC) where people send in video, photos to news channels which they then edit and use. BBC.co.uk and Sky News actively promote this on the web and in news bulletins.
The key difference with Twitter is the Twitterer is going direct to the audience.
I guess the next level would be people actually making their own video or audio reports and posting them direct onto the web onto a dedicated user generated news channel, with no editorial control.  That in itself throws up issues to do with censorship as a lot of the tv news footage from war zones, terrorist attacks and such like is often heavily edited.  Some say 'rightly so' others disagree saying we have a right to see what really happened.
