The UK has been placed 13th in a league table of European healthcare systems.

The 2008 Euro Health Consumer Index (EHCI), which rates countries on issues such as quality of healthcare, information for patients and the link between medical outcomes and ease of access to services, placed the Netherlands at the top of the list, with the biggest margin since the 31 country ranking started in 2005.

Besides the Dutch system there is a small group of strong performers, the ECHI said, including Denmark, Austria and Luxembourg.

The Danish, Hungarian, Luxembourg, Cypriot, French and Portuguese performances contrast sharply with the 2007 index, the first three scoring much better and the last three notably worse.

However, although it gained four points since the last index, Britain remained sandwiched in 13th position between Hungary and Belgium. Latvia's healthcare system was rated the poorest, in 31st position.

Private Healthcare in the UK is not a luxury anymore. With larger and longer living populations it is crucial to make sure you, your family and your business is in good health!

I think the tragedy of this is that this position does not reflect the dedication and ability of most of the medical staff, who on every encounter I have with them fill me with confidence because of their patience and kindness.

It does, however, reflect the inevitable consequence of a beaurocracy fuelled organisation, set targets to fulfil short term political ambitions, and freed from sharp high ability management focused on patient experience.  Who every time I encounter them make me shake my head in despair.

Sadly, private medical health for me is not really an option.  I already paid once, and cant quite see my way to paying again. Plus, as a raving leftie I am a bit squeamish about jumping the queue just because I have more cash.
