The Guardian says Mr Darling is threatening legislation to stop banks withdrawing cheap mortgages and credit lines as he unveils a package of VAT cuts in his pre-Budget report.

What he needs to be doing is forcing the energy people to bring down their prices, and also bring down the council tax.  My council tax under labour has gone from £330.00 to £1160.00!!!

I'm not normally an interventionist believing that markets should be free to decide but I think the actions of the banks is abhorrent as it is tax payers money that has saved them and they are now turning the knife in the wound.

But the government are being very two faced...the comment above about council tax and energy bills is relevant, as the increases in these are a real issue for households on a tight budget...

Jealous of £1160 a year though..my council tax is massively over double that!!! And my combined energy bill is fast catching it up and just under £2k!!!

Anyone else amused by this though?

Darling says lend to banks yet aint that what got us in this mess in the first place?

Being involved in the money game means I have had an interesting few months recently seeing the ups and downs and I am more than happy that the days of irresponsible lending would appear to be a thing of the past.

Yes, Darling is saying do more of the stuff that caused the problem in the first place!

Also, if he had a brain, he would have sorted this issue out in the terms under which the public purse bailed out the banks.
