If you're a registered Google user you may have noticed a change to your search results last Friday. You can now amend your own results and comment on them too. A lot of this information can be seen by others so it will have a huge impact on your business and how others search for you.
For more on how this might affect your business, see:

Actually, so those web savvy businesses who cared to care about thier users this is good news! Anyone who thought they could use smoke and mirror techniques to get good search engine results long term were very sadly deluded. Googles business model is totally focused on the search user and it will do whatever it can to make sure it reliably returns relevent search results .... it was ever thus.

"Apparently" it won't affect the way other users get results - yeah, right!
Now, if I can just persuade 11,000 4N members to log onto their Google account, search "devon hotel", find www.thatchedhotel.co.uk on page 5 and promote me to page 1, you think that won't have any future effect on other people's searches???
But seriously, this is Google using genuine user preferences to build a much more reliable AI algorithm. Expect to see this flow through into all search results over the months/years ahead.

Steve - the fact is it will, certainly in the volumes you describe, have an impact on search returns over time. This is Google saying the user is king, and if enough people use the site and do the necessary it indicates the site is one that meets the user requirements.
This has always been google's plan, this just takes it to another level. I actually see it as a postive thing!

Except if the new system is unable to counter abuse...
But the great thing is, you have to have a google account. That gives traceability. Equally, one user account = one "vote". By controlling account set-up and having traceability, abuse should be very easy to control & counter.
Also, once you give the many millions of real users the tools, it will become progressvely more difficult (and probably uneconomic) for anyone to outweigh genuine public opinion by articifical means.
I think it is a massive step in the right direction.

Who's up for a sweepstake on when the first Searchwiki spamming software arrives? Or when people create multiple accounts and start hiring themselves out as search 'influencers'?
I think it's going to be very interesting to see how it develops and how people use it.
Perhaps we ought to form a power group who are prepared to add the other members for their favourite keywords or phrases and add positive notes?

Same topic - Taken from post tread http://www.4networking.biz/forum/5/24660.htm
From my own SEO and online marketing perceptive I see SearchWiki as a new challenge - the importance of making a clients website attractive to potential visits from customers/clients being all the more important due to the new promote button usable by anyone signed into Google.
Importantly - the promote button and consequent ranking increase is only visible to the Google account holders own search parameters. So promoting a website and expecting it to be visible to at top of Google for all to see is not the case as it will not effect other peoples searches (just wanted to make this clear as there is a lot of misunderstanding in this area)
So when you are searching for say gifts this Christmas and you find a store you like you can "vote it up" find a store you really dislike "vote it down" You can even delete it (which then shows it at the bottom of the page)
Whether in time Google will use this service as a way of looking at the broader picture of searching and feed it through into their algorithm development, I guess remains to be seen...
On a finally note as Lee has already mentioned SEO is more than just getting to number 1 on Google.
Lee Rickler Quote:
BUT in reality SEO is more than just getting to number 1 on google (which is something that the general public haven't quite grasped yet).

Kasumi, have you seen that registered users can see how many other users have promoted or deleted a result? So whilst promoting a result only affects the way your results look, others can see you've done it.
You're certainly right that this is a new challenge. The biggest unkown in the game though is how Google itself is going to play it!

Yes I read about this one several weeks before it was evident and quite a few poo poo'd it suggesting that as many don't have google accounts it will still not affect your rankings within google, yet as above have said, it does mean that they can monitor more closely your searches and see exactly what you are about.
After all, how many of us have google analytics accounts etc and don't realise you are actually signed in all the time!

Interestingly in relation to the comments feature it clearly shows the commenter that their comment will be made public.
I myself added a comment to 4N
"Good networking community forum" posted 11.12am 25/11/2008
I now have the ability to edit or delete this comment at any time, and it should now be visible within the search engines after a search is performed for the keyword 4N.
Can people now see this comment?
The important thing to remember is that Google is is taking this data from registered Google users, and an experiment has already taken place last year which forms the basis of SearchWiki http://www.google.com/experimental/a840e102.html so a lot of the ground work has been done already.
Jon, from my own point of view I always love a challenge, it's motivational!
